On January 19, 1803, the Conquest class gun-brig HMS Fearless was wrecked on Redding Point at the north end of Cawsand Bay.A storm from the south-east hit Plymouth whipping up the sea into such a state that it carried 'water over the town... and deluged the streets in a sluice'. The Fearless was at anchor in the Bay waiting for the weather to clear so that she could es**rt a convoy of merchant ships to the Channel Islands. Instead, due to the worsening weather, Lt Williams, Captain of the Fearless, ordered the topmasts and yards to be lowered and for the crew to put out a second anchor. Despite the precautions the shank of the best bower anchor broke during the course of the afternoon and she began to drive across the bay. The crew fired guns to signal that they were in trouble and at 11pm she struck the shore under high cliffs near Redding Point, going broadside on. The attached image shows the profile plans of the Henslow Design Conquest class of 1794.

On January 5, 1945, a typhoon hits while Task Group 38.1 and Task Group 30.8 are off the coast of Okinawa. Task Group 38.1 passes through the eye of the storm at 7 a.m. that morning. Hurricane force winds of 70 knots (80.5 miles per hour), with gusts up to 100 knots (115 per hour) damage almost every ship in the task groups.

The cruiser USS Pittsburgh (CA-72) lost her bow in the hurricane. Her bow was thrust upward, then sheared off, but there were no casualties. Still fighting the storm, and maneuvering to avoid being hit by her drifting bow structure, Pittsburgh was held quarter-on to the seas by her engine power while the forward bulkhead was shored. After a seven-hour battle, the storm subsided, and Pittsburgh proceeded at 6 knots (11 km/h) to Guam, arriving on June 10. Her bow, nicknamed "McKeesport" (a suburb of Pittsburgh), was later salvaged by the tugboat USS 'Munsee' and brought into Guam.

USS Pittsburgh was photographed with her bow missing.

Though the American flotilla is defeated, the engagement delays the British attack on New Orleans for nine days, buying precious time for Gen. Andrew Jackson's successful defense of New Orleans.
