Our History

In 1994, my wife and I bought a small woodshop in Steubenville, OH and embarked on a journey to transform what had been a family tradition and hobby into a way of life. Our livelihood has grown to support our family, our team of artisans, and our local community as we have made urban revitalization a priority in our company. We are proud to call ourselves American makers and are strongly committed to the quality craftsmanship and creative design behind each of our original products. A combination of conventional techniques and modern machinery allows us to build items to last for generations to come. It is our mission to make products that inspire goodness, truth, and beauty in everyday life. Mark & Gretchen Nelson

According to the Marian Room: “Over 800 years ago, Christians were being captured by the Moslems and sold into slavery by the thousands, and nobody knew what to do about it. Realizing he needed time to plan, reflect and pray about his new calling, John sought out a hermit known as Felix of Valois for his guidance and mentoring. Felix, already 70 years old, joined forces with John. Together they headed to Rome to ask Pope Innocent III for permission to start a new order dedicated in honor of the Blessed Trinity. On December 17, 1198, this permission was granted and so was born the Order of the Most Holy Trinity, also known as the Trinitarians. St. John of Matha founded the Trinitarians to go to the slave markets to buy (ransom) the Christian Slaves and set them free. To carry out this plan, the Trinitarians needed large amounts of money. They placed their fundraising efforts under the patronage of Mary. The Virgin heard John’s call for help and answered without hesitation. In fact, over the following centuries, thousands upon thousands of Christians were saved and returned home as funding kept coming in to the Trinitarians. John of Matha, in thanksgiving and in appreciation of Our Lady’s intercession, bestowed on her the title of “Our Lady of Good Remedy”.

From Assisi to Steubenville—and now to homes and churches around the world.

Our connection to the San Damiano Cross began in the early 1980s, when a small Franciscan ministry in Steubenville began reproducing this beloved image of Christ—the cross that, according to Franciscan tradition, spoke to St. Francis: “Francis, go and repair my house which, as you see, is falling into ruin.”

For decades, our San Damiano products were based on an original scan obtained from Assisi. But in 2024, Mark and Gretchen had the opportunity to see the original cross in the Basilica di Santa Chiara in Assisi and photograph its remarkable colors and details firsthand.

Those photographs inspired a newly revised San Damiano Cross, first created for the renovation of Christ the King Chapel at Franciscan University and designed to more faithfully reflect the original in Assisi.

Now, in honor of the Jubilee Year of St. Francis, we’re bringing those updated colors and details to our entire San Damiano collection.

After 800 years, its invitation remains:
“Rebuild My Church.”
