Debby Dabbles

Debby Dabbles Unique Handmade Photo Jewelry My work combines three of my favorite things: photography, nature, and jewelry. I decided to try making a necklace for her.

I have always loved bugs, flowers, birds, and just being outside. When I was little, one of my favorite things to do was to read field guides. My mom tells me that on car rides I would sit in the back seat with a book about bugs, mammals or birds and regale her with “insteresting facts” about whatever I was reading. In my high school yearbook class, I learned the basics of photography, and I have

loved taking pictures ever since. Naturally, most of my photographs are inspired by nature. I was inspired to make some of my photos into jewelry while trying to come up with an idea of what to get my sister for her birthday. She and I often get each other jewelry as presents, and I was looking for a unique piece to give her. She loved it, and I had so much fun making it that I just kept making more! To make the jewelry, I crop and resize the photos to fit each piece. After sealing the photos to protect them and to preserve the colors, I cover them with a high quality resin which cures to a glass-like finish. Just like glass, the resin might get smudges or finger prints on it over time. This is easily remedied by simply wiping clean with a lint-free cloth.

While I am not doing any shows this fall/winter, I do have a display of my jewelry set up at the PCCA Gallery in Newport, PA. Sorry for the bad quality picture. I forgot my camera so I had to take it with my phone.

This summer I've been taking a lot of really close up photos of insects. It's tricky! Here is one of an ant on some butterfly milkweed that I took today at Hershey Gardens.

This tree was just teeming with bees. I could hear them before I saw them. It took a while for them to get used to me, but pretty soon they were landing on flowers right next to me as if I wasn't even there.
