The Transformers: The Movie hit theaters 40 years ago today on August 8, 1986.

Featuring the voices of Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, Leonard Nimoy, Orson Welles, Judd Nelson, Eric Idle, Robert Stack, and Casey Kasem, The Transformers: The Movie took the Autobots and Decepticons to the big screen.

And one moment an entire generation of kids was absolutely not prepared for.

Optimus Prime died.

If you were a kid in 1986, you know. Watching the leader of the Autobots die on the big screen was devastating, especially when most of us walked into the theater expecting a fun Transformers adventure. That scene had stuck with a lot of us to this day.

The movie opened with nearly $1.8 million and went on to earn about $5.8 million domestically.

Fun fact: The backlash over Optimus Prime's death was so strong that it changed another Hasbro movie. Duke was originally supposed to die in G.I. Joe: The Movie, but after the reaction to Optimus Prime's death, the ending was changed so Duke survived instead.
