FCBD FAQ
Whether you have been coming to Free Comic Book Day for the last 20 or so years or you will be stopping by this year for the first time, there is always some curiosity how the day really works. So here is a quick rundown of some of the questions people have.

1. Is everything free? HA, NO! But there are a lot of free comics designed specifically for this day. There is a wide range of stuff to choose from, starting at books for the kiddos all the way up to R rated material for the weirdos.
2. How many books are available? Will you run out? We always have a lot of books, but the bottom line is pretty simple – if you want something, come early. The first 2 hours or so of the day there is a steady line to wait in and the books go MUCH faster in that time. We absolutely will run out of some/most/all of the stuff.
3. Any extra sales on FCBD? We don’t tend to do any special sales on FCBD, though there is usually a surprise or two on the day. We do fully stock our regular sale rack and there is always amazing stuff on there.
4. Will you guys be doing anything special on the day? As always, we will be doing our donation drive for local State College organizations. In the past we have donated big to PAWS, and Schlow Library is definitely a favorite fellow literary organization. We like to spread around the generosity that Swappers show on FCBD and we will do the same again this year. We will also have our super awesome 50th anniversary Comic Swap t-shirts this year!
5. What time is the event? We will be open our regular store hours on Free Comic Book Day, so 11am to 6pm.

Hey Swappers!

Welp, the pre-FCBD panic has set in. Our big, amazing, stupendous all-out awesome annual event is less than a month away! Free Comic Book Day is Saturday May 2nd and as always we will have outstanding comics to give away. Similar to the last few years, there will be less to spread around than some of the big years. I don’t think we have ever run out, but of course if you want to guarantee and get the goodies, make sure you show up early. We will have regular store hours that day so the Swap will be open from 11am to 6pm.

We do have something REALLY awesome to offer this year. Did you know that 2026 is the Swap’s 50th anniversary? Absolutely unbelievable! We couldn’t let our big event go by without offering something incredible to commemorate this milestone. So Robyn designed the coolest limited edition 50th anniversary Comic Swap t-shirt that could be yours for only $25!

Here’s the lowdown – the only way to guarantee yourself one of these shirts to let us know with an order direct to the store. We will be holding onto them until FCBD for folks to pick up on the day, or after if you can’t make it in. We will happily work something out to ship you a shirt if you don’t live in town anymore, but you still must email your order. If you don’t want to miss out, please email the store ([email protected]) with your quantity and size. We will have all the regular adult (periwinkle) and youth (turquoise) sizes. We will NOT be accepting orders in the comments, you MUST email directly with your info. We know how much folks love the store so we are expecting Swappers old and new, young and old to want one of these. You have up until Wednesday April 8th to get your order in!

Bringing back this all time classic, since ya know, it is likley to be relevant over the next 48 hours.

Just a heads up, we are just going to preemptively keep the Swap closed for Sunday. Never ones to trust the weather reports completely (sorry meteorologists), we are going to lean in a bit this time around. No one should have to go out in what is shaping up to be quite the whopper of a storm. Not expecting Monday to be an issue so back to regular scheudle then, but we will let folks know if that changes. Everyone please stay home if you can, be safe and enjoy the cozy.

So what’s the big announcement?

When we moved to Pittsburgh about 8 years ago people would ask all the time “Are you planning to open another store?”. And I always immediately said “Oh, no way. Opening a new store from the ground up is incredibly hard.” One of the big selling points of buying the Swap when I did was that it was established, I was already running it and the risk seemed relatively low.

Opening a new business is very hard. But sometimes the risk is worth it. The Swap is very stable and John and the staff have it down to a science. I miss being in the store. Robyn has never really had a chance to be part of the store environment. And we want Mina to grow up in a bookstore. So the time is right.

It is a slow process, but we have decided to open a new store in Pittsburgh. We we are in the preliminary stages of looking for a location close to our home. We think that we have a great idea for a new store that will fit into the wonderful Pittsburgh bookstore community. Comics will still be a huge part of new the store, but that will not be the sole focus of what we are trying to do. SciFi and Fantasy Prose, the best children’s and art books, and of course all the best graphic novels around will get a spot.

There will be a lot to do in the coming months or however long it takes for us to find the perfect location for this new place. We are putting ourselves out there by doing our first pop-up on December 6 for the Mount Lebanon Winter market.

We are really happy with the planning so far and we are looking to our loyal swap community to help support getting this new thing off the ground. We have a preliminary website set up and people can sign up for updates as things become available. We’ve also set up an Instagram account for the new store and hope that people will check it out and follow along.

None of this would be possible without the customers of the Comic Swap and what we have built there - we hope that we can do right by what comes next. Thanks everyone for your support. Hello Swappers!

It’s that time again, Comic Swap is hiring! We are looking for a new part time Assistant Manage/Key Holder type person. Pretty straightforward requirements this time around. Somewhat flexible schedule is a big plus as some evening and weekends will be necessary. This time around we are going to need a high level of retail experience and obviously previous supervisor or management experience is a huge bonus. And as always, gotta love the funny books so baseline comic knowledge is a must. The more, the better!

This would be a permanent position, probably around 20 hours a week. If you have applied for the position before and would like to be considered again, please reach out and let us know. Old and new applicants should email a current resume/CV to the store. We are hiring again!

As we move into the fall and holiday season, we are looking for a new part time employee. Pretty much the same gig as always, providing exemplary service and slinging comics to all the Swap faithful. This is first and foremost a customer service position, so being well read and knowing the best comics out there is a top requirement. We will teach you all the ins and outs of the business, all the tech stuff, etc. And having at least a somewhat flexible schedule is pretty important too. There will absolutely be regular weekend work. If you think you would be a good fit, send your resume over to the store at [email protected].

We managed to make it through a pretty chaotic week and are incredibly excited for Free Comic Book Day to be here. We hope you that you and your families are safe and looking forward to the weekend as much as we are.

As usual, we will have a ton of free comics to give away this year. We will be open regular Saturday hours so the event will run from 11am to 6pm. Get here early if you want the best chance of getting something specific because we will FOR SURE run out of everything. And of course we will be doing our regular donation drive for some local charities. Please come on in and say hi to the staff, get some free comics and enjoy the day with us. Help us make the day a huge success by spreading the word and tell anyone who will listen how amazing it all is.
