Finally time to glue the top back on this bass! As you see in the pictures, the bass top is first fitted onto the body with clamps to ensure placement. Then small sections of clamps are taken off and glue is inserted with a thin spatula. Once the glue is applied the clamps are put back on and the process is repeated until the entire top has been glued and secured. During the whole process the luthiers are careful to wipe any glue that drips down the ribs to avoid residue.

We always get so many questions from clients on how to help prevent bridges from warping. And while it is impossible to completely prevent that from happening eventually, here are some tips on how to make your bridges last longer!

Tip 1: Humidity control- make sure that you are keeping your instrument between 35-50% humidity. This not only helps the bridge but the health of the instrument itself!

Tip 2: Adjustments - check bridge after tuning to make sure the feet are still flush to the instrument and make adjustments accordingly (if you have not been taught how to safely adjust a bridge we do NOT advise doing this for fear of damaging the top plate of the instrument!)

Tip 3: Routine check ups and maintenance: bring your instrument to a luthier in the spring and in the fall to make sure the instrument is adjusting well to the climate. Our shop does bridge adjustments and check ups/estimates for free and so do a lot of other great luthier shops in the area! Don’t be shy about bringing your instrument to a luthier to ensure its health. A small trip and some free adjustments and advice can save you hundreds of dollars later down the road!

Introducing our Andreas Morelli cello! Don’t let the Italian name fool you – this instrument actually came from the workshop of Karl Hermann, a luthier based in Markneukirchen, Germany circa 1920. Currently sporting a French bridge, an Akusticus-esque tailpiece, and the popular Larsen/Spirocore string combo, it is a capable instrument for mature players and professionals looking for a dark, sweet sound strikingly consistent across registers. For more information about this cello – and to hear how it sounds – please look forward to our upcoming profile on YouTube!
