Catalpa is a discovery. Whenever we recommend it to a customer, they inevitably come back for more. Easy to work with hand tools, everyone who tackles it becomes a woodworking hero. It is ideal for carving and for outdoors, with a natural sheen few woods exhibit. Takes stain evenly if that suits. Everything about it is EASY, including the price: $4.50/bf for those 16” wide clear slabs.

We carry in 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 8/4 thicknesses.

If it weren’t for walnut, against which almost nothing bad can be said, I’d pick Osage Orange as the finest hardwood grown around here. Scarcity is a problem though.

We just put out a few pieces that came from last year’s tornado damage. That material is now working its way through our kilns.

Curly sassafras. Lighter in weight and easy to work, sassafras has two stunning tricks: a shimmering golden glow, plus it smells like root beer. We don’t see much, but it is a fabulous material for furniture or carving.

A wee bit more HOLLY !

Our first ever batch of holly lasted one day. This smaller second ever batch is cut 5/4 and has excellent color.
