McGhee’s Miniaturers has finally officially moved from their Brentwood retail location. We are working directly with a commercial real estate agent to get a lease on a new and improved space! Ideally it would’ve been nice to have a contract for a new space before leaving the old space, but we all know life does not always work out the way we planned it too!
My last post showed that supposedly my landlord was having the black mold which was growing significantly in the studio ceiling in the wall was being removed. However, it turns out that my landlord instead did remove the drywall and most of the moldy insulation, but failed to remove the dangerous black mold that by then had penetrated into and growing on the wood that made up the ceiling and wall. Check out the pictures of the moldy walls that were then covered with drywall and or drywall mud! They did lightly spray the area with a mixture of 1/2 bleach and 1/2 water, which most people know WILL NOT KILL BLACK TOXIC MOLD!!!
While moving out, I noticed just how fun structurally sound the building was! I had and agent from my insurance company come and evaluate the situation. My agent did inform me that it’s any of my customers had gotten sick from the mold in the building, it would’ve been McGhee’s Miniaturers that would be liable for their illness. He also told me that he felt it was a very good thing that I was moving because in his opinion he felt that before too long the north wall of the building would buckle and collapse. You can see in the pictures that the basement floor which is a concrete pad has heat up so severely it cracked through the entire pad and you can now see and touch the gravel base underneath the floor slab!
The safety and health of not only myself but more importantly my customers became my number one priority and constituted the immediate move! While this has been an exhaustive and backbreaking few weeks moving everything out of the store, I am very excited about finding a new place that will finally allow me to create the store and studio space I have been wanting to provide! Just imagine it, a studio that is organized, clean, and free of clutter! I have a lot of new ideas on how to create this space which I will be sharing in future posts! Please feel free to comment and leave me suggestions or critiques so that we can all be sure that the studio is a place we will all want to spend long hours building and socializing!
