The results of the 2025 St. Louis Magazine A-List are in!

While we didn’t take home the top spot, we’re honored to have been named a Finalist alongside the wonderful Left Bank Books. A huge congratulations to The Novel Neighbor on their well-deserved win!

We’re especially grateful to everyone who voted for us—your support means the world. As the only used bookstore nominated this year, it was incredibly meaningful to feel the love from our community.

On a related note, we’d also like to congratulate our very own Dan Wright, who was named a Finalist in the Best Author category! Dan has been the heart behind our Indie Poetry Series for the past ten years, and we’re so proud of everything he—and all of our team—brings to the store.

Thank you again to everyone who voted. Here’s to next year!

From St. Louis to the wider literary underground, these four collections showcase the vibrancy and range of bold new voices in independent poetry today. "The Unheard Music" by Daniel W. Wright (Kung Fu Treachery Press, 2024) pulses with punk energy and sharply observed truths from one of St. Louis’s most dynamic poetic voices. Heather Kays' "Myths in the Feed" (Crying Heart Press, 2025) explores modern mythology and digital intimacy in a much-anticipated debut. New York poet Scott Laudati’s "Bone House" (Bone Machine, 2018) delivers raw, confessional poems that mine the grit of everyday life. "And It Made a Sound," a collaborative art-poetry project by Kyle Brandt-Lubart and Bobby Stevens, brings visual and verbal language together in striking harmony.

Each book is a testament to what indie publishing can do: take risks, push boundaries, and remind us of poetry’s power to reflect—and shape—the world around us. Come grab a copy and explore our ever-expanding collection of independent literature today!

This year marks a major milestone: Dunaway Books is turning 60! Since 1965, when Pat Dunaway first opened our doors in the Delmar Loop, we’ve been a haven for readers, writers, poets, and thinkers—and we’re still going strong.

To celebrate, we’re throwing a weekend-long party filled with poetry, music, food, and friends. We’d love for you to be part of it.

Friday, August 1st at 7:00 PM
Indie Poetry Series
Hosted by our own Daniel W. Wright, this special Friday-night edition of our Indie Poetry series brings together a powerhouse lineup of poets from across the country. Featuring Scott Laudati (NYC), Jason Ryberg & John Dorsey (Belle, MO), Wesley Scott McMasters (Jefferson City, TN), and local writers Zaire Imani, Bobby Stevens, and Heather Kays. The evening closes with an open mic, so bring your words or come to listen. All are welcome!

Saturday, August 2nd at 5:00 PM
Anniversary Party at Dunaway Books
Join us for great food from The Vine, a glass of wine, and live jazz from St. Louis legend Dave Black.

And for an extra twist: the World Naked Bike Ride rolls by our storefront around 7:15 PM—so get ready for a truly unforgettable evening.

Let’s Celebrate Together! Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or just discovered us last week, you’re part of the Dunaway Books story. Come raise a glass with us to 60 amazing years—and many more to come
