Being able to start a fire in an emergency situation is one of the most important abilities you can have. A fire will provide you with heat, light, security, allow you to boil water, cook food, and signal for rescue. This emergency kit is small enough to easily fit in a bag, purse, glove box or even a pants pocket. This kit holds all the necessary items to help you get a fire going and still has room for you to add your lighter of choice and additional tinder items.

A good part of the country is having extreme cold mixed with snow/ice this week. Hopefully you already have backup heat options such as a kerosene heater or Mr. Buddy heater if your power goes out. You may also need to take precautions to ensure your water pipes don't freeze and burst. Opening the cabinets below sinks can allow heat to get to more of the pipes and prevent freezing. At night, slightly turn on your faucets to allow them to drip and keep water moving. If you suspect you have frozen pipes shut your water off at the main input valve and then turn on all your faucets to get water out of your pipes. If you can find the frozen section thaw it with a hair dryer.
