We are so excited to welcome Devin Thomas O'Shea to Bookmarx on Saturday July 29 at 7:00 PM to have a conversation about his new book “The Veiled Prophet: Secret Societies, White Supremacy, and the Struggle for St. Louis”.

We will have copies available for purchase and signing.

Book description:

“Devin Thomas O’Shea’s The Veiled Prophet is the definitive history of the Veiled Prophet Society in all its violence and pageantry, offering a colorful alternate history of the United States through the lens of the Midwestern elite. O’Shea follows the Veiled Prophet Society from its origins in the wake of the 1877 general strike, through the 1904 World’s Fair, to the height of the Prophet’s―and St. Louis’s―influence during the Cold War. The Veiled Prophet examines the unexpected ways this secret society has shaped the course of history, from the CIA to the Vietnam War to the assassination of Martin Luther King.

Yet the power wielded by the Veiled Prophet has not gone uncontested. Since the Gilded Age, the Prophet has faced resistance from orphans armed with pea-shooters, Communist Party organizers during the Depression, Civil Rights icons, and renegade debutantes. The Ferguson uprising of 2014 was only the most recent challenge to the Prophet’s influence.

As the fight for the soul and streets of St. Louis intensifies, it’s more critical than ever that we expose the sordid history of these powerful, masked figures and their control over our democracy.”

This Saturday June 20 at Bookmarx we have Stories In Stereo with Nathan Labee and Ryan Labee at 1pm! Stories in Stereo is a collaborative music and storytelling showcase hosted at Bookmarx in Springfield, MO, beginning at 1:00 PM.

This event is a creative project built between two brothers, one a musician, the other a writer. The featured work is an original album experience where music and narrative were developed side by side. Compositions written by Nathan LaBee paired with stories written by his brother Ryan LaBee, designed to be experienced as a unified artistic world where sound and storytelling meet.

And on Sunday June 21, join us to bring in the Summer Solstice and celebrate Father’s Day as Sunni Nutt of Essential Yoga Studio leads our first bookstore yoga practice. Tickets are available now!

And all week long, we’ll have Ms Cyrano here to supervise our expansion!

The featured work is an original album experience where music and narrative were developed side by side. Compositions written by Nathan LaBee paired with stories written by his brother Ryan LaBee, designed to be experienced as a unified artistic world where sound and storytelling meet.

While this collaboration is the centerpiece of the event, the afternoon will also include additional original music from Nathan and a selection of written works from Ryan, offering a broader look into their individual creative paths as well.

Set in the literary environment of Bookmarx, Stories in Stereo is an invitation into a shared creative space where music and writing intersect, overlap, and expand into something larger than either form alone.

Today is Harvey’s birthday! 🎉 Another year of the Bookmarx costume budget exceeding by 4000%! But all the wigs and clown makeup have paid dividends, and with Harvey, the store is a more vibrant, joyful place. We’ve had a busy year with the video store and now the expansion (and Harvey’s graduation; oh and she’s currently directing a play for Fringe Fest), but with you as a partner, the work is just another pleasurable part of our lives. I love you and can’t wait to show everyone everything we’ve been working on for the new space! 💜 💚
