Hello to all of you fine electric violinists, violists, cellists and bassists.
Over the last couple of months I have been considering my business: the making of custom electric stringed instruments. Doing this is a passion for me. My goal is to craft instruments to the exact specifications and artistic desires of players.
The Covid-19 pandemic is an event that has few if any parallels in the lives of people in this era. Millions of people in the U.S. and all around the world have been affected, and musicians and other performing artists are most certainly among them. Musicians are selling their instruments. I read of a woman who sold, as she put it, her "beloved violin", which was heartbreaking. The acoustic violin I use for symphony playing and recording was purchased for me by my grandfather. To think of selling that instrument, an instrument which has been and is part of my soul, would be like losing a dear friend.
There are also string players who are purchasing instruments. As an example, I am currently working a 7-string solid-body instrument for a player which is being made from Black and White Ebony, Quilted Maple, and will have a custom-made 7-string bridge which was crafted by Eric Aceto of Ithaca Stringed Instruments.
For those wishing to have a custom electric instrument made, I wanted to post a message about what I can and will do during this time which will help make that desire become a reality..
I will be giving discounts from 10% - 20% to players who want a custom instrument from me. The discount depends on what instrument you want me to make for you.
As I am an independent maker, I am offering the option of a player making installment payments over a period of months, if need be. We can discuss the specifics, of course when you contact me about any and all specifis of having an instrument made.
My standards of quality, artistic concepts and beauty of your instrument remain the same as they have always been. Your instrument will be made from the finest grade of wood I can find. The wood used is your choice, as is the design, if you are wishing to have an instrument commissioned. All the fittings from the pegs/tuners, brand of bridge/pick-up, strings and electronics are your choice.
I've posted a picture of the grade and quality of wood I use when making an instrument. For me, the wood - of whatever species - needs to have an: "Oh, my gosh!" response from both the player and myself when they see it.
I've included a picture of a piece of Quited/Curly Maple I purchased for future use in the construction of an instrument. Though the piece pictured has already been chosen by a player to use in making their instrument, the wood suppliers I have established business relationships with over the years have amazing woods available, and I will do my very best to locate the piece of wood that you agree you want your instrument made with.
It is my wish for all musicians that your playing - online for now, perhaps, and later for live audiences - continues to move people as, for me, having my playing touch a person's heart and soul in a profound way is the greatest compliment a musician can receive.
Thank you all, and play on:)
All my best to you. Sincerely, David Burham, luthier
