Yes, the 2024 fire was devastating, for many. Yes, business in downtown Springfield is a difficult prospect, at best. And, yes, the 'leadership' that is coming out of the city & DSI are appalling. The ripple effects of the fire continue. They didn't end when the embers died, or when the wreckage was removed. Everytime another business closes & cites the fire, I feel a twinge of guilt, although I know it was out of my control. My goal the whole time was to help rebuild downtown, make it more vibrant, not send it into a death spiral. These stories are becoming common in our downtown. Prime evidence of how one tragedy can be compounded by lack of foresight, lack of consideration for those truly affected, & lack of real leadership. I'm sorry. I wish I could have done better.
EDIT/CLARIFICATION: I should have used different language than "twinge of guilt". I know I have no fault in any of this. It's just that a lot of these issues started at my doorstep & I could do nothing about it. It's still a lot to hold & I'll carry it for a long time.
Thank y'all for the comments. They're appreciated.
