Thurston Book Exchange

Thurston Book Exchange In business since 1984. Featuring a LARGE selection of used books, with new bestsellers ordered week

As of April 22, 2016 we have had to close our doors after 32 years in business. Due to our lease running out and the probability of a higher lease in the future it just wasn't financially going to work any longer! Please post messages on this FB account and I will get back to you!

I think I just broke a personal record! During our recent heat spell I read 2 books a day during 4 days of hibernating. Bad news is I may have to actually go out and BUY some more books! Or go check out our local 'little library boxes'.

Time to check in again! So whats everybody been reading? I have seriously read everything I ever had 'stocked up' for rainy days....never expecting to be pretty much housebound for a year! I was gifted the first 5 books of the Outlander series, which was as far as I had read in the series when they first came out. I looked at them for quite a while, rather intimidated by their size (averaging 1000 pages each), once I started in with the first one I realized I had forgotten most of the story over the years. As I got sucked in, I barely came up for air. Ended up buying the next 3, plus a companion book, and a graphic novel version. After I read through all of the books in a little over a month, I was so depressed to be done, I just started over again with #1. I would LOVE to get that excited about another series....if anyone has any ideas, I'd welcome them! Anything but Science fiction!

I'm missing my customers/friends!!! I used to be able to meet up with some of you in the grocery store or elsewhere, and maybe you are there when I am now, but its hard to recognize anyone all masked up. Just wanted to check in, and make sure you're all staying healthy and also WEARING YOUR MASKS!!! Its the only way we're going to get an ok to go on with our lives.
This week starts a new chapter of my life...my husband just retired Friday!! 😳 Not quite sure how thats going to work out, lol, I like my relaxing time and he's the poster child for the Energizer Bunny. If any of you have advice from going through it...please share!
Besides that not much going on....LOTS of reading getting done. Also jigsaw puzzles! If anyone wants to swap 300 piece puzzles, I'd love to.
Hang in there!!!

I finally went to the old bookstore space yesterday. I've been putting it off for a couple of years as I knew it would be a bit heartbreaking. For some reason Costco used my old business address for a set of clippers I ordered, instead of my home address.(confusing since I've only used my home address for at least 6 orders) I waited and waited for the package and finally we tracked it down to 5505 Main st. I tried to call Great Clips, but their message says we're not going to answer the phone today because we're too busy, and we're not going to respond if you leave a message. So I drove out and asked them about the package left there by mistake. They acted confused but finally found it and brought it out, OPENED UP! She said they thought someone there had ordered a clipper set from Costco. I asked if they had someone there named Peggy West? Isn't it against the law to open a package thats not yours? I guess I'm just happy to finally have found where it went...my guys desperately need haircuts and aren't ready to go to a barber.

At times like these I'm very, very glad I am no longer in business! If I had had to close for even a couple of weeks I would've been really hurting financially. I feel so badly for small businesses during the quarantine! Someone mentioned the best thing we can do is buy gift certificates over the phone from stores and restaurants we will be doing business with in the future! Great idea.
That being said I could really use a good used bookstore right now!! I have read everything in my house, and even a lot online. I think if I was still in business I could've been taking orders over the phone in the mornings and delivering books in the afternoon. (With a mask on of course!!)
Stay Safe!!!

I have been totally confused lately by the pictures and design shows with bookcases where the books are placed spine inward! At first I thought maybe it was for copyright purposes, but then what author wouldn't want their books noticed on someone's bookcase! I finally googled it and found out that there are people who like the 'monochromatic' look of pages as opposed to titles. To me this just means that the books are pretty much props on the shelf and these people don't even read the books. Personally, I enjoy the brightness of bookcases! All the color as I walk by them gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling! Also I would never pick out a book to read without looking at the title and author! ( Hmmm...this one is tall and thin and that's just what I feel like reading today! ) Nope, not me!
Maybe I'm just a dinosaur and not in tune with what people want today... I'm interested in what anyone else thinks about it? New and artsy or just stupid?

Everytime I'm about ready to close this account I get a notice that someone 'likes' it! I'm not sure why anyone would like it when its not really even an active account. I do enjoy looking at past posts though and different events I had in the past. I no longer have an account with Ingram where I used to order new books when I had the shop, and continued to order special orders for a couple of years, but they decided I'm not ordering enough to deserve a wholesale account, dang, so those of you who had me order books for you...sorry, better go to Amazon. :-(

There is a bit of action going on at the bookstore space!! I'm curious what is going to go in there. Hopefully whoever opens a business in there can keep up with the high rent! And lets hope its not another pot shop!!! :-)

Kids back to school and I can see the Coburg hills again, its gonna be a great day! Those smokey days certainly helped me get caught up on my reading. I just finished the latest Women's Murder Club book by Patterson, "Medical Examiner" which was ok, and "Enemy of the State" the latest offering by Kyle Mills who is taking over the late Vince Flynn's character Mitch Rapp. It was so intense I barely got any sleep till I finished it. I think it was a great choice for Mills to carry on the character. Usually when an author passes away you lose the author and the character. Anyone read anything lately that they can't put down? Remember if you can't find a book locally just shoot me an email or message me via FB and I'll be happy to see if I can get it new for you and quote you a price. I continue to deliver books weekly to the Thurston area. If you want to say hi I'm usually at the McDonalds between 10-11 (or so) taking orders. Have a great day!!!

The summer is half way over already, its gone SO fast!! I wanted to get through a book a week, but thats just not going to happen! I started the new James Patterson thriller "The Murder Games" and realized that I do have my limits. I couldn't get past the first chapter that started out with the serial killers thoughts about what he does and how he does it. EWWWWW So then switched gears and read the new Susan Elizabeth Phillips light hearted comedy/romance "First Star I See Tonight" which was really fun and different. Also read "Killers Of The Flowers Moon" about the murders within the Osage indian tribe in the 1920's, very well done! It reads like a thriller yet really happened when the tribe inherited oil money. Some rereads mixed in there when I run out of ideas. Anyone have any ideas of good reads for the summer? I'm up for suggestions. Nothing like sitting out in the back yard in the eary morning and reading in the peace and quiet. (That is if I can get up before our neighbors rooster gets up!!) I miss you all!
