BACKGROUND
I shaped my first knife in 2004 out of an old file heated in a propane forge. I had a few of the tools needed from my work as a farrier (horseshoer), such as the anvil and forge. The act of making those first couple of knives was a surprising emotional event! To be able to construct such a simple, yet vitally important tool was just an incredible feeling. I was immediately obsessed and
became committed to improving my skills. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
I strive to combine beauty and function to create useable works of art! It is my desire to elevate the knife beyond being just a tool. I am constantly intrigued by the various combinations of materials and how they affect the overall aesthetics of the knife. METHODS
My blade and overall designs are as original as I can make them. All my knives are 100% sole authorship, including the heat treatment of the steel. I also construct and hand stitch my sheaths. Many of my current knives are made using the stock removal method (the excess material is removed by grinding, sanding, or filing). The steel and guard material is supplied to me in raw bars of different thickness and width. After rough grinding the knife profile I then free hand grind the edge bevels. Next is the heat treatment phase which renders the blade into an efficient cutting tool. This is followed by final polishing and the attachment of guard and handle. In the end it comes down to a lot of patient handwork to achieve the final polish, look, and feel. Periodically I will bring a knife blade to life through the traditional "bladesmithing" method of forge and anvil. This involves patiently heating the steel and shaping it by hammer to form the shape of the knife. The artistic process is able to really flow if I allow the piece to just take me where it wants to go…
LIFESTYLE
I live with my wife and daughter near the "Big Woods" where we live a rich life that revolves around the seasons and cycles of nature. I am an all-seasons outdoor enthusiast. I find much of my inspiration, rejuvenation, and energy from my time spent in Nature. I enjoy a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including: wilderness travel (canoeing and backpacking), hunting, fishing, hiking, cross-country skiing, and general fitness. I started on my road to self-employment as a farrier in 1999. That profession led to an obsession with horse training, which I do for other people on a part time basis during the warmer months. I am constantly working on improving the relationship with my own horses. An avid musician, I performed harmonica, vocals, and guitar in my blues band Live End for several years. I continue to perform with others and as a solo act.
