This is a first printing of Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin published in 1956.

Giovanni’s Room made the list of the BBC’s 100 most influential novels ever written. The Publishing Triangle considers it the second best gay and le***an novel of all time.

Baldwin was an American Black and Gay writer who moved to Paris when he was 24 to escape the racism of 1950s America. His first novel dealt with the Black American experience and his publisher, Knopf, refused to publish Giovanni’s Room because they believed its Gay themes would destroy Baldwin’s reputation among his readers.

Baldwin did not believe that he could tackle both of his major themes (the Black American experience and the Gay experience) in one novel (at least not in the ‘50s) and the characters in GR are white.

The more courageous Dial Press published GR in 1956.

Our first printing of this deeply influential novel is $1,400.

This first printing of The Great Gatsby is one of the many books in our Rare Book Room.

The first printing is famously identified by 5 printing errors. Ours has all 5.

1. Page 60, line 16 chatter instead of echolalia.

2. Page 119, line 22 northern instead of southern.

3. Page 165, line 29 away instead of a dash.

4. Page 205, lines 9-10 sick in tired instead of sick and tired.

5. Page 211, lines 7-8 Union Street station instead of Union Street Station.

Our true first printing of one of the greatest of all American novels is $4,250.

It comes with a facsimile dust jacket (exact reproduction of the original) to help protect it.
