some general history for a Thursday afternoon
The 1st American Volunteer Group, or commonly known as "The Flying Tigers" on 28 May 1942 over China in their P-40 Warhawks, as seen from R.T. Smith. The Flying Tigers were all volunteers and technically civilians. They served from April 1941 until 4 July 1942, when the unit was absorbed to create the 23rd Fighter Group. In total, The Flying Tigers were credited with 229 aerial victories while losing 14 pilots of their own, which was one of the best kill ratios of an American air unit of WW2.
