some general history for a Thursday afternoon

The 1st American Volunteer Group, or commonly known as "The Flying Tigers" on 28 May 1942 over China in their P-40 Warhawks, as seen from R.T. Smith. The Flying Tigers were all volunteers and technically civilians. They served from April 1941 until 4 July 1942, when the unit was absorbed to create the 23rd Fighter Group. In total, The Flying Tigers were credited with 229 aerial victories while losing 14 pilots of their own, which was one of the best kill ratios of an American air unit of WW2.

I find it inconceivable that someone can grow to adulthood without ever having been punched in the face.

+

Kids, especially boys, are supposed to fight, to wrestle, and to become familiar with violence. That is biology.

+

We live in a time that robs children of experience of real interpersonal violence, fills their heads with videogame killing, and overmedicates them psychiatric drugs anytime they act like normal kids.

+

When they finally snap and shoot up a school, we blame it on guns. This is a cycle of insanity.

+

Get your kids away from the television and into a combat sport. Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, wrestling, whatever. You'll find they're not actually as crazy as the doctors say.

+

I know this is Old School but it that's just what I am.

Something for the History buffs

Recently the USS Johnston was confirmed found at over 20,000 feet down in the Pacific, making it the deepest naval ship ever found. Johnston was sunk 25 October 1944 during the Battle of Samar, which was apart of the Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. Only 141 of the 327 man crew survived, with Commander Ernest Evans posthumously receiving the Medal of Honor for actions on that day. Credit to the Research Vessel Petrel of Vulcan Inc. for their great work in finding the USS Johnston.

Hunting Bag, Man-Purse, etc. Everything comes full circle.

What were the Basic survival Essentials Carried in the Frontiersmanโ€™s Hunting Bag? Our ancestors more commonly called it a โ€˜Bullet Pouchโ€™ and here is why you should never call it a โ€˜possibles bagโ€™. A friend of mine asked about trying the old ways of running the woods and trails as was done...

Hiroo Onada, 19 March 1922 to 16 January 2014.

Japanese Imperial Army Lt. Onada was the last officer (and second-to-last overall) to surrender in World War II on 9 March 1974 on the Philippine island of Lubang. He held out almost 30 years after the end of the war, refusing to believe leaflets and other attempts to tell him the war was over. He finally surrendered when his former commanding officer, Major Yoshimi Taniguchi, was flown in from Japan and "properly" relieved Onada with the order below. He definitely took to heart in whatever the Japanese version of the 1st General Order was.

1. In accordance with the Imperial command, the Fourteenth Area Army has ceased all combat activity.

2. In accordance with military Headquarters Command No. A-2003, the Special Squadron of Staff's Headquarters is relieved of all military duties.

3. Units and individuals under the command of Special Squadron are to cease military activities and operations immediately and place themselves under the command of the nearest superior officer. When no officer can be found, they are to communicate with the American or Philippine forces and follow their directives

A little Sunday morning reading.

6 January 1919, Theodore Roosevelt passed away at his home Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, New York.

He was the 26th President of the United States, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, President of the Board of Commissioners of the New York Police Department, Governor of New York, Medal of Honor recipient (awarded 2001), conservationist, rancher, lover of strenuous physical activity, and most importantly (his view), Colonel of the 1st Volunteer United States Cavalry. After the presidency he preferred to be called simply "Colonel." If you haven't read the three volume series by Edmund Morris (The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, Theodore Rex, Colonel Roosevelt) on the life of TR is it recommended you do.
