Opals 101: How Are Opals Appraised (and What Are They Worth)?
Ever wonder how opals get their value? These mesmerizing stones are more than just pretty—there’s a method behind their sparkle! Here’s a quick guide to what appraisers look for and what you can expect in value:
1. Type of Opal
Black Opal: Most valuable – often appraised from $1,000 to $15,000+ per carat
Boulder Opal: Unique and durable – around $100 to $3,000 per carat
Crystal Opal: Semi-transparent with vibrant color – $200 to $2,500 per carat
White Opal: Common but still beautiful – $20 to $200 per carat
2. Play-of-Color
Opals with bold flashes of red, orange, green, and blue are appraised higher.
Bright, multicolor stones can fetch $1,000+ per carat
Subtle color or single-tone flashes might be $50 to $200 per carat
3. Body Tone
Black/Dark Body Tone = higher value (enhances colors)
White/Light Tone = generally lower value
4. Pattern
Rare patterns like harlequin or floral raise the price.
A harlequin-pattern black opal can go for $10,000+ per carat
5. Clarity & Transparency
Clean, vibrant crystal opals are worth more
Cloudy or heavily included opals see reduced value
6. Cut & Shape
Precision cut = more sparkle and better value
Freeform opals vary, but a well-cut oval might fetch 25–50% more
7. Size & Carat Weight
Larger stones with high quality features? Jackpot.
A 10ct top-grade black opal can be worth $50,000+
Every opal is truly one-of-a-kind. That’s what makes them magical—and worth knowing how they’re valued!
