When Jenny St. John was eighteen, she moved to Los Angeles from her rural midwestern hometown and scored the lead role in an independent film called The Divide. Under the intimate direction of young auteur Serge Grumet, Jenny was on her way to becoming the next indie darling. But then the movie tanked, and Jenny never caught a second break. Now, two decades later, after floundering on the fringes of the entertainment industry, she’s barely keeping afloat running a low-level grift as a psychic life coach.

But when news surfaces that Serge has been murdered, Jenny’s life is turned upside down. Unbeknownst to Jenny, Serge’s ex-wife, painter Gena Santos, looks alarmingly similar to Jenny. So much so that when Gena goes missing, the cops think Jenny is Gena.

Jenny finds herself pulled into Gena’s world and manages to leverage both her resemblance to Gena and her faux psychic abilities to infiltrate the affluent yet unstable inner circle of friends, which include a Korean pop idol–turned–social media star and an Oscar-winning actress–turned–wellness guru. Soon Jenny’s search to find Gena unearths dark secrets about her own past while putting her squarely in the sights of a killer.

THE LADIES REIGN. THE PALACE ROTS. THE BEAST RISES.

When the Guardian of the West Passage died in her bed, the women of Grey Tower fed her to the crows and went back to their chores. No successor was named as Guardian, no one took up the fallen blade; the West Passage went unguarded.

Now, snow blankets Grey in the height of summer, foretelling the coming of the Beast. The too-young Mother of Grey House and the Guardian’s unnamed squire set out to save their people.

Their narrow shoulders bear a heavy burden. Before them lies the West Passage, home to horrors and delights that defy imagining. None can say if they’ll reach their destinations, but one thing is for sure: the world is about to change.

TONIGHT! Our staff is OBSESSED with The West Passage. Hope you’ll join us!

Saturday, August 24 at 7pm Jared Pechaček will discuss his incredible new fantasy novel, THE WEST PASSAGE, with Travis Baldree, #1 NYT bestselling author of Legends and Lattes. Travis calls THE WEST PASSAGE “a dangerous book of secrets. It is the singular agony of a delicious dream half-recalled. Its shadows are colonized with the gorgeous, the grotesque, and the forgotten — and now you are a vital link in their remembrance.” Several of our booksellers are obsessed with this book, and we cannot wait for this event. Do not miss this!

Bestselling author stopped by yesterday to sign all our copies of her brand new book, GOOD DUKE GONE WILD. We had lots of pre-orders for her to sign too! In this dazzling historical romance, a Duke with a complicated romantic history and a bookseller with a family business to protect find themselves drawn to each other—even if their hidden secrets should keep them apart.
____________________________

Dorian Whitaker, Duke of Holland, needs an heir after his so-called “fairytale marriage” ended in disaster. When the intriguing bookseller he’s hired to liquidate his late wife’s library finds love letters revealing an affair, he is drawn into a mystery alongside a lady whose sharp intellect dazzles him and dares him to imagine a new adventure outside the gilded cage of the Ton.

If anyone found out Caroline Danvers writes erotic novels under a pen name, she’d face utter ruin. Except her latest hero inspiration is none other than the Duke of Holland—a man with the power to destroy her family’s bookshop. And yet the real man proves to be so much more than the character she created. Even as they expose the dark secrets of his past, she knows he can never discover her own. But the more time they spend together, the more tempting it is to rewrite their ending and turn fantasy into reality.

Last week we celebrated David Axelrod’s latest poetry collection, SKIING WITH DOSTOYEVSKY, and we’ve got a few signed copies if you missed out!

This volume brings together pieces from David Axelrod’s previous nine collections along with thirty-two brilliant new poems—the whole a kind of symphonic effort to clarify the unity of consciousness, water, wind, and stone—all life, in fact, and the planet itself. These poems are powerful meditations. To read them is to enter into an act of praise driven by intelligence and an unfailingly accurate ear for what might be called the melody of meaning.

Scott C. Johnson came through today and signed our copies of HOLLYWOOD CON QUEEN, which is the basis for the docuseries now streaming on Apple TV+!

The spellbinding tale of an epic international manhunt for a psychopathic con artist who exploited the dreams of creators to steal dozens of identities and millions of dollars.

Blending years of deep reporting with distinctive, powerful prose, Scott C. Johnson’s unique true crime narrative recounts the tale of the brilliantly cunning imposter who carved a path of financial and emotional destruction across the world. Gifted with a diabolical flair for impersonation, manipulation, and deception, the Con Queen used their skill with accents and deft psychological insight to sweep through the entertainment industry. Johnson traces the origins of this mastermind and follows the years-long investigation of a singularly determined private detective who helped deliver them to the FBI. Described by one victim as a “crazy, evil genius,” the Con Queen enacted one of the most elaborate scams ever to hit Hollywood—the perfect criminal, committing the perfect crime for our time.

But for what purpose? And with what motive?
Johnson’s unparalleled access to sources—including exclusive interviews with victims and never-before-heard recordings of the Con Queen—brought global attention to the scam, spurred law enforcement to act, and led Johnson himself to venture in search of the Con Queen. Journeying from Los Angeles to the United Kingdom to Jakarta, Johnson eventually came face-to-face with one of the most disturbing criminal minds in recent history, only to realize what chasing the Con Queen revealed about himself and his own troubled family history.

A SHORT WALK THROUGH A WIDE WORLD by Douglas Westerbeke

“So maybe this novel is a metaphor for the wonders and adventures one has in a book. Or maybe it’s a metaphor for the pain and slow death that stagnation brings. Or maybe it’s just a collection of wonderful vignettes from a trip around the Earth. Either way, I still had an absolute blast reading this novel. And sometimes books are fun and that’s enough, dang it. Sometimes books are fun.” -Kurt

recently stopped by and signed copies of A COLD, COLD WORLD, the latest in her Sheriff Bet Rivers Mystery, just released this week!
_____________

A female sheriff tries to fill her late father’s boots and be the sheriff her small Washington State mountain town needs as a deadly snow storm engulfs the town, in this dark, twisty mystery.

The world felt pure. Nature made the location pristine again, hiding the scene from prying eyes. As if no one had died there at all.

In the months since Bet Rivers solved her first murder investigation and secured the sheriff’s seat in Collier, she’s remained determined to keep her town safe. With a massive snowstorm looming, it’s more important than ever that she stays vigilant.
When Bet gets a call that a family of tourists has stumbled across a teen injured in a snowmobile accident on a mountain ridge, she braves the storm to investigate. However, once she arrives at the scene of the accident it’s clear to Bet that the teen is not injured; he’s dead. And has been for some time . . .
Investigating a possible homicide is hard enough, but with the worst snowstorm the valley has seen in years threatening the safety of her town, not to mention the integrity of her crime scenes - as they seem to be mounting up as well - Bet has to move fast to uncover the complicated truth and prove that she’s worthy of keeping her father’s badge.

Thank you to all who came to celebrate Joe Wilkins’s beautiful new novel, THE ENTIRE SKY, last night! With echoes of Demon Copperhead and Plainsong, THE ENTIRE SKY is a poignant story about a troubled boy on the run, an aging rancher, and a woman at a crossroads, who find unexpected solace and kinship in the family they make. Limited signed copies are available on our shelves now.

“Joe Wilkins’s The Entire Sky exposes with strength and poetry the unjust pain of toxic masculinity and the profound damage it wages on children. In these pages a different potential for manhood is turned over and examined, one that allows for gentleness, healing, acceptance, grace. Wilkins gives an exquisite depth to the Montana landscape and to his characters—this is a textured, bloody, and breathtaking book.” -

TONIGHT!

Wednesday, August 7 at 7:00pm, award-winning author Joe Wilkins will discuss his new novel, THE ENTIRE SKY with Sharma Shields, author of The Cassandra and The Sasquatch Hunter’s Almanac.

About the book:

With echoes of Demon Copperhead and Plainsong, a poignant story about a troubled boy on the run, an aging rancher, and a woman at a crossroads, who find unexpected solace and kinship in the family they make.

With his long hair and penchant for guitar, teenage Justin is the spitting image of his idol, Kurt Cobain—a resemblance that has often marked him an outcast. When the long-simmering abuse from his uncle finally boils over, Justin has no choice but to break free, in a violent act that will haunt him, and try to make it on his own as a runaway.

Meanwhile, in rural Montana, Rene Bouchard, a rancher nearing retirement, grieves the recent death of his wife. Her passing has revealed precisely how fractured the family has become—particularly the relationship between Rene and his daughter, Lianne. As old wounds ache anew, father and daughter begin to doubt the possibility of reconciliation, even as they each privately yearn for it.

Justin’s wanderings bring him to the Bouchard family ranch, and soon Rene and Lianne take the boy in as their own. But before long, Justin’s past threatens to catch up with him, jeopardizing not only his new bond with Rene and Lianne but also the home he’s finally been able to claim. With its lyricism, tangible evocation of place, and piercing insight reminiscent of the novels of Barbara Kingsolver and Kent Haruf, The Entire Sky is an unforgettable piece of modern, American fiction.

Tuesday, September 3 at 5:30pm at Liberty Park Library, award-winning writer and current Montana Poet Laureate Chris La Tray will share his brand new book, BECOMING LITTLE SHELL: A LANDLESS INDIAN’S JOURNEY HOME. Hope you’ll join us!

Growing up in Montana, Chris La Tray always identified as Indian. Despite the fact that his father fiercely denied any connection, he found Indigenous people alluring, often recalling his grandmother’s consistent mention of their Chippewa heritage.

When La Tray attended his grandfather’s funeral as a young man, he finally found himself surrounded by relatives who obviously were Indigenous. “Who were they?” he wondered, and “Why was I never allowed to know them?” Combining diligent research and compelling conversations with authors, activists, elders, and historians, La Tray embarks on a journey into his family’s past, discovering along the way a larger story of the complicated history of Indigenous communities—as well as the devastating effects of colonialism that continue to ripple through surviving generations. And as he comes to embrace his full identity, he eventually seeks enrollment with the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians, joining their 158-year-long struggle for federal recognition.

Both personal and historical, BECOMING LITTLE SHELL is a testament to the power of storytelling, to family and legacy, and to finding home. Infused with candor, heart, wisdom, and an abiding love for a place and a people, Chris La Tray’s remarkable journey is both revelatory and redemptive.

*A scorchingly hot modern retelling of Ariadne and her Minotaur.*

Ariadne Vitalis is in trouble. She’s betrayed her father—and his dangerous benefactor—and now she’s left to rely on Olympus’ questionable mercy. But in this city, mercy comes with a price. For Ariadne, that means a sham marriage to Dionysus. She has no choice but to agree, even if there’s only one man she’s ever wanted—a man she fears just as much as she desires.

The Minotaur never had any illusions about Minos’s plans. He was willing to get his hands dirty as long as the old man kept his word—at the end of their bloody work, the Minotaur would be given Ariadne as a reward. She’s meant for him, and he intends to have her, no matter the cost.

Ariadne knows better than to encourage the Minotaur—she’s all too aware of how hot a passion like theirs can burn. Besides, she can never forgive him for the terrible things he’s done, and he can never change. But when his hands are on her body and his wicked words are whispered in her ear, she might just be willing to let all of Olympus burn…

CEREMONY by Leslie Marmon Silko

“Bound to be a future classic, this novel explores the struggles of PTSD, alcoholism, and indigenous identity. Protagonist Tayo has been released from a military hospital after his traumatic experiences in the Pacific Theatre of WWII but can’t seem to find solace on his native Pueblo land. He’s alienated from his veteran friends, troubled by the deaths of his cousin and uncle, and slipping deeper into alcoholism to cope. What’s worse is he believes the prayer he recited in the Philippines to stop the endless rain may have caused the current drought at home and is the reason for his inability to heal the scars of war. Silko uses the Pueblo people’s cultural emphasis on story, myth, and ritual to explore Tayo’s struggles and transformation in an incredible work of indigenous literature.” -Devin
