The beauty of silk. It looks so nice on this vintage Chinese painting on mulberry paper. We wrapped the silk over the window mat and used a charcoal colored, stained quartered oak fillet to finish the mat window edge. The silk is so organic and looks great with the cockled paper. 🤩

Now that it has come and gone we can share a fanatic Warhol serigraph worth approximately 50k. It’s one of the more desirable soup cans especially since it’s a discontinued flavor. Of course we used the latest in archival framing complete with TruVue’s Museum Optium acrylic, cotton rag mat, mulberry paper hinges with Beva film for the adhesive. We used solid maple moulding for stability.

Design-wise, we used the concept of the can rim: a tall and narrow moulding with a matching wood spacer to create the look of the the rim edge as it moves down to the flat part of the lid. Not sure if that makes sense.

We love how it turned out. So sharp and clean and the customer was blown away. It’s so appealing.

Double glazed float mount. Over the years I’ve seen so many sophomoric attempts to secure the glass into the frame. The best ones use a wood spacer like this. Keep in mind this look is decorative and not archival. Don’t do this to precious items. The glazing can cook the item and moisture could collect and cause damage. Looks nice though!

Just finished work on this french matting. I’m such a sucker for this form of decoration on the right piece. It’s always exciting when customers are on board to have one made for them. They look especially good on vintage looking works. They’re a bit nerve wracking to make though. If I mess up I have to completely start over. I just have to relax and breathe and let things play out the way they play out and not get too attached to the effort.

Thank the stars for gurus that were able to pass their knowledge on to others before passing away. Marty Horowitz, one of the authors of the book in the pic, was a huge inspiration. This book has been an amazing resource on making custom gilded finishes. We’re working on a dutch black finish right now which includes using a dark red shellac. The book has a useful shellac recipe. :)

We’ve seen a fair amount of images from Mark Maggiori come through the shop in the last year or so. Such dramatic work. It’s so satisfying to look at. The customer got bold with this frame and we added a hand wrapped gray suede liner to give the piece a little breathing room away from the frame. I wish you could see it in real life to appreciate the three dimensional appeal.

Spokane is a soccer town now if you didn’t already know we have a pro league now. We have yet to see a Velocity or Zephyr jersey, but here’s a great looking one we recently framed for a fan. They collected a bunch of player autographs and had a plate made showing who signed it along with their player number. Looks sharp and they were super stoked with how it turned out.
