Trick or Treat!
Halloween simply wouldn't be the same without those fun (and king!) size candy bars to sweeten the day. But there was a time when trick-or-treaters didn't receive candy at all, but rather pieces of cake, fruit, nuts, coins, and little toys, according to the History Channel. It wasn't until the 1950s, when candy makers began to promote their goods for Halloween, that candy became a staple on the trick-or-treating circuit. These days, one quarter of all the candy sold in the U.S. each year is purchased for Halloween.

Oh say it isn't so....poor kiddos.

Fun Samhain fact.....

Bobbing for apples started with fortune-telling, specifically predicting whom a woman would marry. In one version of the game, girls would discretely mark apples before placing them in water, and when their male peers would try to catch the fruit, the apple they got would determine their future mate.

If you've watched any supernatural shows, you might notice that some characters use salt as a way to protect themselves against frightening spirits — and there's a pretty good reason why. Some say that salt acts as a "protective shield against evil spirits and malevolent entities" and has been a practice dating back to ancient times. Even if you're not a true believer, it can't hurt to sprinkle a bit on your doorstep should any unwelcome visitors stop by on Halloween night.

Turnips, not pumpkins: The first jack-o'-lanterns were carved from turnips before the tradition migrated to the Americas and pumpkins became the more common vegetable used.
