Tens of thousands of Irish people left Ireland during the Great Potao Famine. Many of them landed in New York City and immediately started working wherever they could find a job. Both men and women and even children worked hard and they saved what they could in a bank called the Emigrant Savings Bank. A bank established by Irishmen for the Irish. This bank gathered extensive information about them when they opened an account: name, address, occupation, precise birth town, parish, county, name of ship, date landed, names and whereabouts of parents, mother’s maiden name, and names and locations of siblings. They also tracked where these individuals subsequently moved to from New York where known. This data has been preserved and digitized. It can prove invaluable for Irish genealogy research.

I strongly recommend reading a new book published this year by Tyler Anbinder. It sheds much new light on these immigrants.

Located along the western edge of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way lie the Cliffs of Moher. We were recently there on a perfectly clear day. The cliffs rise 700 feet straight up from the ocean offering stunning views. Every step along the winding cliffs reveals unique lighting and shadows, perfect for capturing amazing photographs and breathtaking scenery.

Another interesting note is that two ships of the Spanish Armada crashed off the west shore of Ireland in 1588. The sailors who survived remained in Ireland. Their skin was darker than the incumbent Irish and down through the centuries their descendants became known as “black” Irish.

According to legend St. Patrick himself came here to convert King Aenghus to Christianity in the fifth century. The surviving buildings are remarkable. Cormac’s Chapel, for example, contains the only surviving Romanesque frescoes in Ireland.

Arrived this morning in Dublin, Ireland for the first day of our group road tour. The airport was experiencing a power outage. Backup generators got us through customs and baggage claim. Getting us to the taxi/dus/ train area was a different matter. None of the elevators or escalators were operative. We had to figure out how to get heavy luggage down three flights of stairs to the ground transportation. A man who had a wife and two young children saw us staring down the flights of stairs and told us to wait. He took his luggage down then climbed back up to get ours!! It rained until mid day then cleared in the afternoon and evening for perfect weather. We got lots of random walking through downtown Dublin. Tons of people of all ages were out and about. It’s a very friendly and walkable city.
