Hey Bookies! Here's the Event Recap "Part 2" from Saturday! This year's book expo marked a 10-year anniversary for Detroit Book City ~ Metro Detroit’s longest-running Black-led literary event featuring the independent authors. Our mission is to promote, preserve and sustain literacy while celebrating Black history.

02/23/2026

🎯🎉Woot!! Thank you Detroit for showing up!! Ten years ago, Detroit Book City was created with a simple but powerful belief: books have the power to change lives, strengthen families and preserve our culture. What began as a vision to bring Black literature directly into our neighborhoods has grown into a community-centered movement rooted in literacy, connection and pride.

This ✨10-Year Milestone Anniversary✨ event was more than a celebration of time—it is a celebration of impact. Over the past decade, we've witnessed children discover the joy of reading, families build home libraries and independent Black authors share their stories with audiences who see themselves reflected on the page. These moments remind us why this movement matters.

🙏❣️Thank you to our authors, partners and staff for believing in this mission. Most importantly, thank you to the families and readers who continue to show up, year after year, in support of literacy and community across Metro Detroit.

Because when we READ together, we GROW together! Enjoy the Recap (1of4)... See ya next year!!🥰

With gratitude,
Janeice & Reginald Haynes

🕊️ Today we pause with heavy hearts at the passing of Jesse Jackson. We’re so grateful that he was part of our history — attending our very first African American Family Book Expo in 2017. His presence affirmed the importance of literacy, Black authorship and the power of our stories.

We will remember his legacy of advocacy and his lifelong commitment to uplifting our community. Rest in power, sir…🙏❤️
