As many of you know, in December, I listed my building for sale. I didn't offer much of an explanation as I was still coming to terms with the decision.
Since December of 2021, this building has been more than just walls and a roof to me. It has been a place of hard work, memories, friendships, and community.
After a lot of thought, I’ve decided that running two businesses is just too much. My first love has always been The Islander newspaper. It has been part of almost all of my adult life – 26 years.
When I bought the newspaper in December of 2016, it was my dream. Many of you know my father got very sick right after I purchased the paper and passed away just a few months later. Looking back, that was the hardest time I’ve ever been through. There was a messy probate situation, harassment, fear, and grief I wasn't allowed to process. It was difficult to hold everything together during those two long years, but with the support of two key employees and their unwavering belief in me, we made it through.
When that darkness finally lifted, I was left with all of my ideas and dreams for what the paper could become.
Not long after that, I was approached about buying the Frog. My first thought was, “How in the world could I do both?” Somehow, I did. What I didn’t do was run both businesses at the level I expect from myself. I ran them well, but they both deserved more.
At the ripe age of 47, it doesn’t feel right to me to keep burning the candle at both ends.
The Islander will always be what I was meant to do. I believe in the “little newspaper that could” more than I believe in most things. I have an incredible staff, and I get to work with people from all different walks of life. The job of a weekly newspaper is so much bigger than many people realize. When newspapers disappear, communities suffer. I’m not ready to give up on my dreams for what this newspaper is and what it can still become.
That being said, the Frog has meant so much to me, and I truly hope it will continue to serve the community in new and meaningful ways for whoever becomes its next owner. The possibilities in that beautiful building are endless.
Places like this are special in a small town. They become part of the rhythm of everyday life.
I’ve met some of my favorite people while running the store. Inspiring, kind, amazing people who have become friends. I promise we will stay in touch.
