It’s Thursday. That means one thing: Out with the old and in with the something else.
John Gall (or, ), the creative director for the publisher Alfred A. Knopf, creates and oversees the design of hundreds of book covers each year. In an effort to forget what he knew about design, in 2008 he began making collages for his own pleasure. Although collage has long been part of his job, the work shown in our new exhibit is not related to any design problem or book. It is simply about seeing what might happen when something is added or taken away—or both.
Come see before January 14, 2023—and stay tuned for the other show we’ll be announcing later today.

It’s Friday. So that means you’re probably gonna wanna plan to come here soon and the good news is that soon we’ll be open from 11a to 6p today and tomorrow.
And now the bad news: There are times when we need more time. One show needs to end. The next show’s not quite ready. Enter our .. Our second is a showing of prints from ’s Daily Drop Cap project. See twenty-six takes on your favorite twenty-six Latin caps in five drawers and one vitrine, all arranged in alphabetical order. This delightful exploration of decorated letters arrived at ours just in time for spring with hope that hope will spring eternal. And now it’s almost autumn, so this show ends on September 3. Hurry.

Before he was an internationally-celebrated author and illustrator of children’s books, Eric Carle was a graphic designer—and sometimes he designed book covers. This small showing of covers (most of which were designed well before he encountered brown bears or hungry caterpillars) will reintroduce you to the artist you thought you already knew.
This one ends on September 3.

It’s Sunday. That means one thing: This book deserves a movie, but we’re just gonna do this simple post for now because it’s Sunday.
Massive and majestic, moving and motivating, this huge book of alphabets makes our hearts beat a little faster. It’s loaded with large, hand-drawn display alphabets that’re just begging to be turned into typefaces. There is so much inspiring work here. Eugen Nerdinger and Lisa Beck have prepared forty-eight unique sets of lettering to be used and adapted by designers and architects for whatever we might need. We’re not sure why this book isn’t known and used by every designer. From the first page to the last, it is as beautiful as it is useful. A+++.

This brick of a book is by is brilliant. It features all sorts of fabulous, interesting things, from toys and tots, to cooks and coffee, animals and brutalist buildings, war machines and washing machines. And all of these fabulous and interesting things are featured on matchbox labels from Czechoslovakia, Poland, Russia, Hungary and Germany. But, most importantly, each mid-century label in the book is a graphic joy to behold. Amazing fun.

It’s Monday. That means two things: We’re shippin’ books and thinkin’ ’bout who we’ve forsook.
We know there are important surveys of Black designers and creatives on the Internet, but it’s too easy to get distracted when looking at them (or, anything). We might be looking into one designer and then two seconds later we’re looking at something else that pops into our silly brains. But a book is something different. .co has done us a tremendous service by collecting in a plain-old book the work of thirty Black creatives from all over the world. This diverse and compelling collection is an excellent introduction to excellent work and follows a smart format: 1 pic + 1 short bio + 1 short statement + info about where to learn more. A tremendous resource.
And now a note about the fu***rs at Amazon and the big box stores: They’re selling this book for $5 less than we are . . . and they offer free shipping. Why on earth would anyone buy this book from us? Well, you can pay full price and know that we’ll donate $5 to the . (But you still gotta pay for shipping [unless you come in].)

It’s Thursday. That means two things: We’re asking what you’re doing Friday and/or Saturday and you’re answering, “Uh, duh. Katherine Small Gallery obviously.”
We were so taken by .licko’s weavings that we asked if we could have a show of them. (Artists take note: Don’t ask us. We’ll ask you.) The geometric designs in these jacquard weavings are constructed from Licko’s Crackly pattern fonts, and then fine tuned into compositions. But now that show comes to an end at 6p on Saturday. Come take one last look before we ship these off to their new homes.
Note: If you bought one of these pieces we’ll ship to you next week.
