It’s alway fun getting time-capsule bikes in the shop because they speak volumes about what was happening in cycling during that time period. And this pristine 2012 Ruby Expert is no exception, a perfect example of the paradox of innovation happening between experimentation with new materials, geometry, and new technology all while grasping to adapt to what had worked for decades.

In the race for lightweight, durable, and comfortable endurance machines, the FACT (functional advanced composite technology) 9r carbon frame was a unique blend of carbon tubing bonded to aluminum pieces which adapted wheels, brakes, and bottom brackets from older metal-framed bike standards. Elastomer “Zertz” inserts in the fork and seat stays helped to dampen road chatter that occurred in much stiffer carbon frames compared to their metal counterparts. The end result was a very successful run of women-specific models that lasted nearly 2 decades. Unisex models eventually took over as body-centric components allowed manufacturers to slim down product lines while still being able to fit riders of both sexes.

This particular bike is extra special as it is a original and was owned and passed down by two founding members and was tastefully modified over the years including a larger cassette for those steep climbs, S-Works Zertz carbon suspension seat post and bars, and one of the first tubeless compatible wheels for rim-braked bikes, the ever popular Kysrium. It came into the shop for our full Performance Tune and she really got the spa treatment 💅 Topped off with new tape keeping with those teal tones, we think this one turned out just gorgeous.
