View of reindeer inside a F-27 airplane in Anchorage, Alaska, with flight crew and reindeer herders in background. These 43 reindeer were flown 500 miles from Nunivak Island to Anchorage in 1960. The reindeer were purchased from the Bureau of Indian Affairs by a Californian. After flying them to Anchorage, he loaded them into a trailer for the trek down the Alcan. He then trained the reindeer and rented them out to department store Santa Clauses during the Christmas season. Two Nunivak Island herders accompanied the reindeer flight. The pilot was Don Johnson and copilot Fred Richards. The stewardess was Jan Schulz.
