We attended the Memorial Day Service at Fairview Cemetery this morning. ElDean Holthus did a great job with his presentation.
In addition to the service, there are signs posted by the Fairview Cemetery Flag Committee who are raising funds to purchase and install new flagpoles to replace and expand their display at our town cemetery. This is an impressive display they show every year on Memorial Day. The grounds are surrounded with flags and you can’t help but feel pride when you witness it.
What most people don’t know, the flags currently flying were the same flags draped over the caskets of military veterans.
Reading that should send chills down your spine. It brings the meaning of those flags flying to a higher level. The committee is currently raising funds to expand the project and replace the current poles with modern telescoping flagpoles. This will make the process of raising and lowering the flags more efficient and require less maintenance on ropes and pulleys. If you can donate to this cause, please see the information posted in the picture below.
Lastly, our kids asked what the coins on the military headstones mean. What an opportunity to educate.
If you leave a penny, it means you visited. A nickel means that you and the deceased soldier trained at boot camp together. If you served with the soldier, you leave a dime. A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that soldier was killed.
Always hold the men and women who served this great country with the highest respect and thank those that are still with us today.
God Bless our current troops, veterans and this great nation.
