One of the things I love most about doing shows and events is the people you meet along the way.

When you’re setting up, working long days, and doing event after event, you get to know the people behind the scenes. The ones directing traffic, fixing problems before anyone knows they exist, answering questions, finding solutions, and doing all the little things that make an event successful.

Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo has become one of my favorite events each year, not just because of the show itself, but because of the people. Over the years I’ve grown to genuinely care about so many of them and consider many of them friends.

That’s why this week’s tragedy hits especially hard.

Please keep Paul “Pauly” Nebel, his family, his friends, and the entire Central States Fair family in your thoughts and prayers. When you’ve seen firsthand how much someone gives to others and how hard they work to make things better for everyone around them, it hurts even more to see them and those who love them facing something so unimaginable.

We’re praying for healing, strength, and comfort for everyone affected.

Sometimes the people who help make our events successful become so much more than event staff. They become friends, and this one hits hard. ❤️

I’ve been a little quieter on here lately.

Not because I stopped sewing.
Not because I stopped caring.
And definitely not because I ran out of stories.

Life has just been life.

Some days have been filled with fabric and blankets.
Some days have been filled with grief.
Some with laughter.
Some with hard conversations.
Some with dreaming about where this little business could go next.

But every day, I’ve kept showing up.

I’ve cut fabric.
I’ve sewn blankets.
I’ve answered messages.
I’ve packed orders.
I’ve prayed over people I may never meet.

And through it all, I’ve been reminded why I started this journey in the first place.

Shake Rattle & Sew was never about blankets.

The blankets are simply the vehicle.

It’s about comfort.

It’s about wrapping someone up when words aren’t enough.

It’s about celebrating babies, birthdays, weddings, graduations, cancer victories, healing journeys, and even saying goodbye to people we love.

It’s about creating something that lasts.

Every blanket that leaves my shop carries a little piece of my heart, my mom’s legacy, and my belief that kindness still matters.

So if you’re still here…

As we unpack the trailer and put everything away, our hearts are full.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by Shake Rattle & Sew this weekend at The Market at White Barns. Whether you purchased a blanket, squeezed every fabric we had, shared a story, or simply stopped to say hello, we appreciate every single one of you.

This was our first time at White Barns, and we honestly didn’t know what to expect. You welcomed us, supported us, and reminded us why we love doing what we do.

Every blanket we make is sewn with love right here in South Dakota, and every purchase helps support a small family business with a big dream.

After months of dreaming, planning, researching, negotiating, and probably overthinking it… 😅

🐻✨ BUILD A BUDDY has officially arrived at Shake Rattle & Sew! ✨🐻

And THIS weekend is its debut!

We’ll be at The Market at White Barns in West Union, Iowa TODAY till 6 and TOMORROW from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Come pick your buddy, help bring them to life, and take home a new best friend. We have bears, animals, and more waiting for their forever homes.

Four years ago today, I lost my mom.

People often ask where the heart behind Shake Rattle & Sew comes from.

It comes from her.

What started as sewing baby blankets together turned into so much more over the years. After her cancer diagnosis, these blankets became comfort, purpose, distraction, hope, and time together that I will forever be grateful for.

When she passed away, I honestly think part of me just kept going on autopilot. Sewing. Working. Building. Staying busy so I didn’t have to fully sit in the grief.

But lately, I finally have.

And while the grief is heavy, so is the gratitude.

Every blanket I sew carries pieces of what she taught me:
Love people well.
Make others feel comforted.
Show up.
Be kind.
Leave things softer than you found them.

Shake Rattle & Sew has never just been about blankets. It’s about comfort on the hardest days and the best days. It’s about love you can physically wrap around yourself.

So today, I’m missing my mom extra hard. But I’m also incredibly thankful that her love still lives on through every stitch, every customer, every story, and every hug these blankets bring.

Thank you for continuing to support this dream, her legacy, and the handmade heart behind it all.

I had someone ask me recently why handmade blankets cost more than store blankets.

And honestly?
Because you’re not just buying fabric.

You’re buying:
• late nights
• sore hands
• creativity
• problem solving
• quality materials
• tiny details most people never notice
• years of learning
• love sewn into every single stitch

You’re buying something made by an actual person who does a happy dance when customers send photos, cries when people share stories behind their blankets, and still gets excited every single time fabric arrives. 😂

There are cheaper blankets everywhere. I know that.

But there’s only one you can message and say:
“My friend lost her mom.”
“My daughter is leaving for college.”
“My grandma is sick.”
“My kid needs comfort.”
“My dog stole my blanket and now I need another one.” 😅

…and have someone genuinely CARE while making it.

That’s the difference.
