🧡 Mom's favorite thing (that she didn't make) 🧡

❄️ This month Mom's favorite thing in the store are the stained glass snowflake ornaments from Handcrafted by Heidi. She happened to get two new ones to add to her collection for Christmas this year! She thinks they are so pretty and each one is different just like real snowflakes, and they make her smile. You make us smile too mom 😘

If you’ll be in the Freeman area tomorrow for Chislic Fest or actually anytime, I did a restock of stained glass…including some brand new pieces you can’t find anywhere else! Please check it out, the Heritage Hall Museum and Archives Mercantile has something for everyone!!!

Our museum is pleased to give local artisans the opportunity to sell their wares in our mercantile. It includes these recent delightful additions – coin purses from Janice Graber and new stained glass from Heidi Schrag . We’ve also got books, décor, handmade soap, kitchen items, knitted items, notecards, postcards, prints, placemats, pottery, scarves, tea towels, T-shirts, unique linen items, wall hangings, willow baskets and more. (They make excellent Freeman, S.D. souvenirs!) We’re open until 8 tonight (7/30) and from 10 to 6 tomorrow (7/31). Although there’s admission to tour our museum you are welcome to visit and shop in our mercantile.

If you’re looking for some stained glass for Mom, check out the Mercantile at Heritage Hall Museum and Archives in Freeman, SD...they have a great selection of plant stakes and other glass stuff, not to mention a ton of other amazing things from local makers.

Next Sunday is Mother’s Day. If you’re looking for a unique gift for your mom, we invite you to visit our mercantile; we’ve got a variety of items produced by local artisans to fit any taste. We’re open from 9 to 4 weekdays and from 1 to 4 weekends.

We were curious about the holiday and so we did a little research. It’s been an official holiday in the United States since 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing it on the second Sunday in May.
But the roots of the observance go back half a century earlier. In 1858, Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia organized Mothers' Day Work Clubs as part of a growing public health movement. Twelve years later, abolitionist and suffragette Julia Ward Howe wrote a “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” urging mothers to unite in promoting world peace.
By 1912 many states, towns and churches had adopted some form of Mother’s Day as an annual holiday; these influences led to the official designation. Interestingly, shortly after that, Jarvis began voicing regrets, troubled by the commercialization of something she wanted to simply be a day of personal celebration between mothers and families.
In 1944, Jarvis who was 80, was placed in a mental asylum called the Marshall Square Sanitarium. She died four years later, alone and penniless from the various legal battles she waged over the holiday she started. She never made any profit from Mother’s Day; she never had any children.
