Reach Literacy Book Club

Reach Literacy Book Club The Reach Literacy Community Book Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the 3rd Thursday of the month in the 421 Jones Building in downtown Sioux Falls.

This club is free and open to the public. REACH is a nonprofit that provides literacy instruction and experiences for adult and youth readers each year through ground-breaking tutoring programs and the innovative use of donated books in our beautiful secondhand bookstore. Our literacy program transforms adults reading and writing skills through experienced volunteer tutors who deliver innovative i

nstruction, are passionate about education, and serve as positive role models. Adult learners feel supported in a safe learning environment for practice, exploration, and language lessons. Our BEE a Reader program pairs a volunteer with emerging readers via zoom. These consistent, positive interactions aim to provide students with a dependable role model who works to strengthen their confidence with regard to reading. Through our REACH a Teacher Grants, we provide readers of all ages with engaging, appropriate, and high-quality books. Each year we provide thousands of books to schools and nonprofits across the Sioux Empire. Funding for our work comes in large part from the sale of donated books at our fantastic REACH a Reader bookstore, as well as online and at special events.

We've chosen our July book. You can find it in our events. It's "The Rabbit Hutch" by Tess Gunty, which was a finalist for the National Book Award.

An online obituary writer. A young mother with a dark secret. A woman waging a solo campaign against rodents — neighbors, separated only by the thin walls of a low-cost housing complex in the once bustling industrial center of V***a Vale, Indiana.

Our May book is Solito by Javier Zamora.

Javier Zamora’s adventure is a three-thousand-mile journey from his small town in El Salvador, through Guatemala and Mexico, and across the U.S. border. He will leave behind his beloved aunt and grandparents to reunite with a mother who left four years ago and a father he barely remembers. Traveling alone amid a group of strangers and a “coyote” hired to lead them to safety, Javier expects his trip to last two short weeks.

At nine years old, all Javier can imagine is rushing into his parents’ arms, snuggling in bed between them, and living under the same roof again. He cannot foresee the perilous boat trips, relentless desert treks, pointed guns, arrests and deceptions that await him; nor can he know that those two weeks will expand into two life-altering months alongside fellow migrants who will come to encircle him like an unexpected family.

A memoir as gripping as it is moving, Solito provides an immediate and intimate account not only of a treacherous and near-impossible journey, but also of the miraculous kindness and love delivered at the most unexpected moments. Solito is Javier Zamora’s story, but it’s also the story of millions of others who had no choice but to leave home.

See you Thursday, May 18th at the Jones Building.
