Today, Bicycle Cellar is honoring Robert Redford, not just for the legend he was, but for a subtle moment that connects him to all of us. In the opening of Three Days of the Condor, he rides into work at the CIA on an early model E-Bike, moving through New York’s streets. It wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t about chasing terrorists or dramatic escapes. It was just movement. Calm, steady, inevitable.

Okay, so he wasn't wearing a helmet (It would be a sin to cover that iconic hair). But the image stays: someone choosing two wheels, choosing quiet motion through a gritty city teeming with secrets. That decision, that scene, becomes part of why we ride. The way someone moves quietly through chaos matters.

Robert Redford, you gave us more than films. You gave moments like this, where choice, motion, and integrity intersect.

Ride in peace.

Recently we had a conversation about the important benefits of cycling with Uche Amaechi, Harvard's Chair of the Leading Change Foundations and Lecturer on leadership at the Graduate School of Education.

"I’ve always been a cycling commuter, but I didn’t start cycling for fun until COVID. The reason I recommend cycling is that you get emotional and mental benefits as well as physical benefits. Mentally, cycling gives me time to really think things through, to work through what’s in my head. Emotionally, it’s a great way to release stress I didn’t even know I had, it’s very cathartic. And it’s a great way to get to know what’s in your neighborhood: You become more aware of your surroundings.

In leadership, we always talk about the importance of work-life balance. You can’t be a good leader if you’re not taking care of yourself. Cycling is a great way to get time on your own to focus, clear your mind, and find your center so you can be a better leader and a better team member."

For sale on Amazon. Why is this bike Illegal in Connecticut?

Recently, a young girl accompanied by her father came to The Bicycle Cellar with a severely damaged E-Bike. Its front fork was badly bent, wiring was exposed, and the scrapes, dents, and dirt showed evidence of driving fast resulting in a bad crash. It was completely ruined. We could clearly see this was a sketchy off-brand E-Bike, purchased online, and powered well over Connecticut’s legal wattage and speed capabilities limits. This was not a bike we nor any other shop could fix. As we inspected the damage, she looked up and quietly told us that she was just 13 years old, adding, “All my friends have these.”

We were stunned, and frankly, scared. E-bikes can be an incredible tool for independence and fun. But overpowered motors, underpowered brakes, unstable frames, and illegal speed limits on unregulated bikes put kids in real danger every day. Parents and communities need to pay attention, because what seems like a cool shortcut to freedom could end in tragedy.

An E-Bike is more than a purchase – it’s an investment in freedom, fun, and sustainability. Choosing the right one, safely and legally, starts with good information and a trusted local shop.

Buying online may seem convenient until your E-Bike arrives half-built with questionable components and no local support when issues arise. Supporting your local bike shop means investing in trusted service, your safety, and your community’s long-term health.

Thinking of Buying an E-Bike?
We’ve prepared a practical guide on what to consider before buying an E-Bike, including battery safety, range, and replacement costs. Send us a message here on Facebook and will reply with the PDF.

At The Bicycle Cellar, you can test ride multiple models, get honest answers to your questions, and leave with a road-ready bike built for your needs. We’re part of your community, supporting local jobs, sponsoring events, and keeping Connecticut’s cycling culture strong.

We Charged Toward a Cleaner Future!

The Bicycle Cellar was proud to represent Connecticut’s cycling community during Connecticut Clean Energy Week, part of the Northeast Renewable Energy Coalition’s tri-state movement for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Why were we there? Because clean, sustainable transportation is a vital piece of a clean energy future. E-Bikes reduce emissions, ease congestion, and make clean transportation fun, accessible, and practical for everyone.

As Connecticut’s most innovative E-Bike specialists, we showcased how E-Bikes transform local transportation, empower communities, and support climate resilience right here in the Northeast.

The Northeast Renewable Energy Coalition (NREC) unites leaders, innovators, businesses, and communities across MA, RI, and CT to accelerate the clean energy transition. From policy change and investment to community empowerment and workforce development, it is a movement for real change, and we are honored to ride alongside them.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to see the power of e-bikes in advancing a clean, equitable energy future!

Together, we’re building a cleaner, healthier Connecticut, one ride at a time.

Ever tried changing your bike chain yourself? 😅

Yeah… we’ve been there. The greasy hands. The chain that won’t stay on. That moment it somehow ties itself in a knot that defies physics.

👀 But watch this video: our master mechanic Frank swaps a chain in under 60 seconds like it’s nothing. 🚴‍♂️💨

Want your bike back on the road (without the frustration)? Bring it to The Bicycle Cellar. Frank will have you rolling in no time.

🛠️ We make it look easy. So you can get back to riding.

The Bicycle Cellar is committed to the safety of you and your family.

We want you to know that over 30,000 bicycle helmets have been recalled due to a defect that could cause them to fail to protect against head injuries during a crash.

These helmets were sold at Walmart, Target, Amazon, and Academy Sports + Outdoors. The Bicycle Cellar does not carry these helmets and has never sold them.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 31,200 Bell Sports helmets were recalled for not meeting the federal impact safety standards required for bicycle helmets. This means the helmets could fail in a crash, increasing the risk of serious head injury.

If you purchased a Bell Sports helmet from one of these retailers, stop using it immediately and contact Bell Sports for a refund or replacement. Bell’s contact information is below.

The Bicycle Cellar only provides high-grade, quality helmets and safety equipment. That’s why it’s so important to Buy Local from neighborhood retailers you know and trust. Come visit us at the Bicycle Cellar and let us help you select the best equipment for your ride.

We’ll also inspect your bike and helmet for safety issues you may not be aware of. For instance, did you know Bicycle Helmets have an expiration date? They do! Let’s find out if yours is expired.

Contact Bell Sports toll-free at 800-456-2355 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, email at [email protected], or online at https://www.thebellgarage.com/bell-sports-helmet-recall-notice-axle-cadence-rev-passage-and-frenzy-models/ or www.thebellgarage.com and click on the “Recall” banner at the top of the page for more information.
