Dutch Oven Mac & Cheese: Camp Comfort Food at Its Best 🧀🔥

Nobody ever sat around a campfire and said "I wish we had something fancier than mac and cheese." 🧀🔥 They don't, because Dutch oven mac and cheese at camp is better than almost anything else you can make outside. Here's how:

Boil 2 cups of elbow pasta in salted water until just barely done — slightly underdone is fine, it finishes in the oven. Drain it. In your Dutch oven over low camp stove heat, melt 3 tablespoons of butter, whisk in 2 tablespoons of flour until it's a paste, then slowly pour in 1½ cups of milk, stirring constantly until it thickens — about 3-4 minutes. Pull it off the heat, stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar until melted and smooth. Add the pasta back in, stir to coat, put the lid on, and let it sit over very low heat for 5 minutes.

Optional but highly recommended: crumble bacon on top before serving.

Total cost for 4-6 people: about $5. The reaction around the fire: worth every penny.
