Vendor applications for the 2nd Annual Greenhouse Winter Makers Market are OFFICIALLY OPEN! ❄️🥳

It may seem early to be thinking of the holidays just yet, but if you’re a small business creative/maker/retail team, it’s definitely already begun.

We are SO excited to be hosting this new Shoreline Community tradition once again. It was a joy and an honor to be a part of last years market, where dozens of vendors were able to share unique, handcrafted goods and community members helped gather literal TONS of food and financial support for Hopelink’s vital nonprofit work. It was, in a word, galvanizing. This year will hopefully be no different and we look forward to seeing you there, in one way or another. ❤️🌲

Happy Father’s Day! While you may be out shopping for your dad’s golf obsession or grilling hobby, don’t rule out a hanging basket or even a porch goose 😉 We’ve got lots of beautiful plants in the greenhouse and nursery, and a big supply of summery gifts, so feel free to come take a look, or bring your pops in for a stroll! We’ll be open today from 9am-6pm.

Happy Friday of Pollinator Week! If you’ve ever been curious what pollinator you would be, hold down on the screen to pause the video and find out!
This week (and every week!) keep your eye out for the little critters that do so much to support the health of our world! Every bee, fly, wasp, beetle, hummingbird, butterfly, and moth plays a huge role in making sure our gardens stay beautiful, and that there’s food on the table. 🐝🦋🪲

Want to support pollinators in your garden? Take a look at these tips for a healthy garden and pollinator population (they go hand in hand!)

🐝 When choosing plants, having a seasonal rotation (including winter and fall!) of blooming flowers will help pollinators do their job year round!

🐝 Since many of our native PNW bees are solitary and live underground, leaving plant material such as leaves can help them make a cozy nest for cold seasons

🐝 Try to avoid chemical sprays as they can hurt beneficial critters in the garden! A great effective alternative is making a homemade spray with natural ingredients

🐝 If you are using chemical sprays, protect the bees in your yard by not spraying open flowers where bees pollinate and rest, and spray in the evening when bees aren’s as active

As pollinators do a great deal of work making sure our gardens come back beautifully every year, gardeners have special reason to do our part in supporting and protecting their work!

Have you ever wondered why lavender is always surrounded by buzzing bees, or why butterflies love flat flowers? Different pollinators are attracted to different plant characteristics, which is why diversity in the garden is so important!

🌺 Hummingbirds are drawn to tubular-shaped flowers that hold nectar, which they can reach with their long beaks

🐝 Bees prefer flowers with easy access to pollen and nectar, often favoring blue, purple, and violet blooms

🦋 Butterflies seek clusters of flowers that provide a stable landing platform while they feed

By planting a variety of flower shapes, colors, and bloom times, you can help support a wider range of pollinators and contribute to a healthier native landscape!

When you hear pollinator, what do you think of?
For many people, they think of honeybees! While bees of all kinds are incredibly important, pollinators are much more diverse than most of us realize. In the PNW alone, thousands of species help pollinate plants, which supports our native landscape, keep gardens healthy, and puts food on the table. 
Some pollinators you might spot in your own backyard include:
🌺 Rufous Hummingbirds
🪲 Flower Beetles
🌙 Sphinx Moths
🐝 Mason Bees
🦋 Western Tiger Swallowtails
🐝 Parasitic Wasps (they’re friendly, don’t worry!)
🪰 Hover Flies
While bees often get the spotlight, flies, beetles, butterflies, moths, wasps, and even hummingbirds all play important roles in keeping our gardens happy and healthy. This Pollinator Week, take a closer look at the flowers around you...you may be surprised by who’s helping them bloom!

As we enter the hot season in the PNW, it’s important to know how to best irrigate your garden to prevent evaporation, support your plants, and conserve water! Knowing your own goals will help in picking which irrigation system to choose this summer, but it’s also important to know these factors about your garden: 

🪴 Know your soil! If you have very well draining soil, you’ll have to water differently than if you have a clay-dense soil that doesn’t drain as well.

💧Know how much water each plant needs! Some plants are drought tolerant, meaning that they only need water 1-2x per month, while other plants love being deeply and frequently hydrated! Knowing your plants’ needs will help keep a healthy, happy garden this summer.

In addition, keep in mind these watering tips for the summer:

☀️Try to water in the morning and evening, especially if you use sprinklers or a hose! The hot sun can lead to a high volume of evaporation while watering in the peak heat of the sun, and water droplets can evaporate before they even reach the ground.

 🌿Water plants slower and for a longer time. In the hot summer months, soil can take longer to deeply absorb water, and it may run off the top of the soil if watered too ‘quickly.’

🌱If you’re watering with an irrigation or drip system, you can install valves to designate more or less water to certain plants... while there’s a high initial cost and effort setting it up, you can have as much control as you would with a watering can with none of the work! 

This summer, take some time to learn each of your plants and their water needs! Finding a watering system that fits your goals as a gardener will greatly help ensure that your garden stays hydrated, even in the hot, sunny weather to come.
