Scenario: Rubber insulating blankets stored folded flat in a hot truck compartment all summer. By the time they're pulled for a job, the folds have set in and the rubber is stiff.

This is more common than you'd think — and it's a real problem.

Folding creates permanent creases that weaken the insulation at stress points. Heat accelerates rubber degradation. Combine the two and you've got blankets that may look usable but have compromised dielectric integrity.

ASTM D1048 is clear: rubber blankets should be rolled (not folded) and stored in ventilated canister bags, away from heat and UV. Blankets that show cracking, stiffness, or permanent creases should be pulled from service and retested.

Scenario: A worker's FR shirt takes a minor arc flash hit. No injuries, no burn-through — just slight discoloration. Can it go back into rotation?

The safe answer: probably not.

Even when FR clothing looks intact after an arc event, the thermal exposure may have degraded the fabric's protective rating. Stiffness, brittleness, and discoloration are all indicators that the garment's performance has been compromised.

Many safety programs require automatic replacement of any FR garment involved in an arc event — regardless of visible damage. It's the right call. The cost of replacement is negligible compared to the risk of reduced protection in a second event.
