Perhaps the most important object ever made in the history of Fabergé, this nephrite jade pickle is encrusted with a gold ring set with diamonds. It once served as a scent bottle, but could also probably fit a single cornichon.

"You must never use that word—'kept'."
Denham Fouts
– May 9, 1914

Denham Fouts was one of the most famous male prostitutes of all time. He traveled the world for his wealthy clients. He was uncommonly handsome and spoke with a genteel Southern accent that everyone who met him found totally charming. He invented himself. If people didn't know his background, he would just make it up.

He loved having a pampered life, noted for staying in bed all day after making lots of money from his vigorous s*x work, ordering room service, and asking other people to do things for him.

Once, he learned from one of his New York clients that the man he had a biggest crush on, writer Truman Capote, was traveling to Paris. A rich client knew about the crush and paid for his ticket to Paris to meet Capote. Of course they met, and they became pals and playmates, but Fouts was addicted to o***m. Capote, of all people, convinced him to go to a rehab clinic. He promised to meet up with him in Italy once he got out, but Capote learned that Fouts never completed the program, and was smoking o***m as soon as he left, so Capote dropped him. However, their relationship had an immense impact on both. Capote: "Denny, long before he surfaced in my cove, was a legend well-known to me, a myth Best-Kept Boy in the World."

The way Fouts picked his clients was legendary; after becoming infatuated with the Harold Halma portrait of Capote on the cover of OTHER VOICES, OTHER ROOMS (1948), Fouts sent a blank check to the writer with just one word only: "Come"; Capote, of course, obliged. Capote wrote: "…had Denham Fouts yielded to Adolf Hitler's advances, there would have been no World War II."

Other writers and artists used Fouts as a muse, including Gore Vidal, Christopher Isherwood, Gavin Lambert, Aldous Huxley, Tennessee Williams, painters Peter Watson and Michael Wishart, photographer George Platt Lynes, and actor Jean Marais, plus a long list of international millionaires.

He never recovered from his drug addiction, and he died at 35 years old while living in Rome after years of co***ne, o***m, ci******es, booze, and a wild promiscuous lifestyle.
