New York is Big, but this is Biggar.

Our small town slogan was the perfect mantra to use for our newest merch drop for New York Craft Brewers Conference happening in Albany today and tomorrow.

Spring has sprung and so has Petey the Prairie Dog.

Thanks to the benefits of a strong Canadian barley harvest, we’re pleased to share that our new price book features reduced pricing on all Prairie Malt bags.

From Two-Row Pale to Prairie Select, it’s the perfect time to stock up on our premium Canadian Prairie malts — all delivering the high enzymatic horsepower brewers have come to expect from their favorite maltster (with a certain furry mascot).

St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner. Whether you're brewing hundreds of hectolitres of Irish Stout or taking over your taproom with Irish Red Ale, it's the perfect time to consider your malt choices when brewing and marketing your festive, Spring-friendly beers.

Minch Malt is Ireland's oldest and largest malting company - dating back to 1847. They are also our sister maltings under the umbrella.

We're pleased to offer Minch Hunter Pale Malt for your consideration. This authentic, Irish, heirloom malt pre-dates Maris Otter, but possesses many of the same flavor characteristics and similar specifications that make Maris Otter so beloved around the world.

The only thing more impressive than the specifications of Minch Hunter Pale is its origin story.

Until recently, Hunter was a nearly extinct Irish barley varietal which dates all the way back to 1959. It is the genetic child of Irish barley varieties Spratt Archer and Kenia.

It was named after the famous Irish barley breeder Herbert Hunter. It had a strong non-breaking straw and higher yielding strain that increased its popularity among farmers.

By 1963, 50% of the malting barley acreage in Ireland was sown with Hunter and figures from the Department of Agriculture show that by 1966, it accounted for 75% of Irish malting barley purchases.

Hunter's dominance of the Irish malting barley industry continued up until 1978-1979.

Determined to bring this historic variety back into the fold of Irish malting, Minch Malt approached the Irish Department of Agriculture with a plan to resurrect Hunter.

The process began in 2015 with only a few kernels - 25g total - which had been stored in a seed bank at the Irish Department of Agriculture's facility in Backweston, County Dublin.

With much diligence and patience, 25g of Hunter was sown in a Department of Agriculture glasshouse in 2015, then scaled up to 1 ton in 2016, to 15 tons and beyond. Hunter Pale Malt was born again.

The rest, as they say, is history. Learn more about this one-of-a-kind malt on our website: https://bit.ly/3NYjs1F

Cheers to our friends Prost Brewing Company and Joyride Brewing Company for their hospitality during a recent IPA collaboration brew day. Our Mountain Region Craft Manager Jeremy attended the brew day for Broken Ride, a 6.9% Double Dry Hopped IPA that was produced with a grist of Prairie Two-Row Pale, Prairie Special Pale and Prairie White Wheat.

Prost in Northglenn, Colorado is undoubtedly one of the coolest production breweries you can visit in North America. Endosperm mashing, open fermentation, decoction brewing, horizontal lagering, ridiculous clarification - you name it, it's an awesome blend of historical brewing methodology complemented by mountains of shimmering steel and ultra-modern equipment. It was a real thrill to collaborate with such an iconic brand and see our malt move seamlessly through their beautiful facility.

Thanks for hosting and be sure to grab some cans of Broken Ride and taste for yourself how awesome this beer turned out.

We're throwing it back this Thursday to reminisce on this epic limited edition illustration produced by acclaimed artist Phineas X. Jones for our joint Great American Beer Festival booth with Roadhouse Brewing Co. and Melvin Brewing.

In total, we gave out 30 poster sized prints of this quirky illustration to the lucky winners who found our Petey Plushie dolls hidden throughout the Great American Beer Festival floor. We think it looks best when displayed right above the mantle in your living room.

The illustration was inspired by what you might find on the wood-paneled walls of Petey's House of Pilsner, our favorite, metaphysical watering hole that is an ode to the charming dive bars you'll find near our home in the Prairie provinces of Western Canada.

Petey and the Melvin Elephant joined the Roadhouse Bear to enjoy some pitchers of cold beer, a few snacks, and a friendly game of poker. What more could you want?

10/17/2025

It's already been 1 week since Great American Beer Festival and we're still thinking about how great it was to connect with so many customers, craft beer fanatics, colleagues and industry connections. After all, maltsters have more fun, right?

We had a few disposable cameras on hand throughout the festival itself, as well as during customer dinners, visits to local Denver area breweries, our party bus ride to the Petey's House of Pilsner event at The Kentucky Inn and other miscellaneous but equally special moment of revelry.

Thanks for making this such a memorable week! See you next year!

Boy oh boy, last Thursday night was a movie! We really brought Petey's House of Pilsner's kinetic energy to life at the Kentucky Inn in Denver for our post-Great American Beer Festival after party.

We had cold pints of Petey's Powerwagon Pils - a 4.9% delicate Pilsner brewed with 100% Prairie Select - flowing all night.

The revelry, the chicken wings and the beer especially were on point. Special shout out to our friends from Roadhouse Brewing Co. and Melvin Brewing for co-sponsoring the our GABF booth, the event at the Kentucky Inn and especially for brewing such a refreshing and easy-drinking pilsner to share with our friends, customers and colleagues.
