I had to let this one sink in before posting about it. Last weekend, Dennis Mitchell and I fished the SBC Buddy Bass Tournament on Table Rock Lake. We’ve fished this tournament together since 2010 making this the 15th year but 13th tournament since we missed a couple over the years. The best we ever did was a 5th place finish back in 2019. There were many years of bad decisions on the area of the lake to fish, changing weather conditions that affected our bite, and, of course, years when we had boat issues.

This year was different. The fish were where they were supposed to be. The bite was exactly what we found in practice. We started out slow on tournament morning but by the end of the day, we had limited and culled up 4 times. With a bag that went 15.70lbs, we FINALLY took 1st place!

The bass were up very shallow in the flooded bushes as the lake was rising due to all the rain. The key was to skip your lure up into the bushes then watch your line take off when a bass would grab it. My primary setup was a 7’ MHF St. Croix Rods Legend Xtreme paired with an 8.1 Daiwa Tatula reel. I exclusively spool my reels with Seaguar InvisX 100% fluorocarbon line and for this type of fishing I use 15lb test. The main soft plastic I threw was a Missile Baits D-bomb beaver which skipped perfectly under the bushes. @

It was championship weekend on Pomme de Terre this past weekend. The lake was turning over and with bluebird skies, it was a stingy bite. Justin Allen and I were able to bring limits to the scales on Saturday and Sunday for a 2-day total of 21.59 lbs which was enough to take the W. Justin hammered a 4 1/2 pounder on Saturday that was big bass and he landed a 28 inch Muskie to take our side pot!

Justin caught the majority of our fish throwing a soft plastic jerkbait around structure. I helped the cause with a Megabass jerkbait and a weightless senko.

2023 had its ups and downs but we finished with back-to-back wins and have high expectations for 2024!

It took Justin Allen and I all day but we were able to put together a nice limit of smallmouth that tipped the scales at just over 15 lbs—just under after a dead fish penalty. I had 7 bites, 1 short and our 5 keepers that was good enough to take the W in the final regular tournament for Backlashers Bass Club Of Kansas.

All of my fish were caught on a small, soft plastic craw bait paired with a Trokar 3O hook on 15 lb Fish Seaguar Invisx 100% fluorocarbon line spooled on a Daiwa Corporation - USA Tatula Elite 8.1/1 reel (hat tip Darryl Glassinger) on a 7’ MHF St. Croix Rods Legend Xtreme rod.

Over the years, Stockton Lake, more than any other lake in the Ozarks, is synonymous with summer fishing. Typically, top water, big worms and deep cranks are the ticket. Not this weekend! The Backlasher’s of KC tour stop began Saturday and it was like the bass were sleeping on the couch and wouldn’t chase a free meal! If it wasn’t for Justin Allen, we would have been out of the running. Sunday, the bite improved and we had a couple quality fish on top water but when that bite died, we had to find deep brush piles to get any bites whatsoever. Without FFS, it would have been nearly impossible to cull up as much as we did. It turned out the 2 other teams had just slightly better kickers than us so we landed in 3rd place. Always good to be on Stockton even when it is challenging! Thanks to Daiwa Corporation - USA, St. Croix Rods, Seaguar(シーガー), Zoom Bait, Megabass of America for making even the tough days rewarding!

First off, Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms out there but especially my mom, Sharon Reinert Stuart! Next, a short recap from a tough day for me and Justin Allen on LaCygne. It was a grind, to say the least. We caught 6 largemouth that were short, 3 catfish, 2 bluegills, and one fat crappie. At 1 p.m., with nothing in the live well, we needed to figure something out.

I went back to the basics. I Texas rigged a Zoom magnum finesse worm on my St. Croix Rods 7’MHF bait casting rod paired with a Daiwa Tatula 8.1/1 reel spooled with 15 lb. Seaguar(シーガー)100% fluorocarbon line that got us our only keeper of the day right off a main lake point.

I always see fisherman say that everyday on the water they learn something but few ever say what they learned. What I learned yesterday on LaCygne was twofold, 1) Never give up—even though it was a grind and getting hot out, keep thinking and keep casting; and 2) Remember where you came from—few, if any, fishermen start out throwing high-end lures. Most of us start out with a plastic worm on a hook and sometimes that is the best way to catch a keeper!

Back to back weekends at Table Rock lake with back to back checks! The first tournament was the SBC (see my previous post) and we found our fish on main lake points where bluffs transitioned into pea gravel points and, the key, was there had to be docks. These were all prespawn bass. Our best, most consistent, and quality bites came on jerkbaits. The general area we fished was the James River arm between Piney Creek and Bridgeport.

This past weekend, Justin Allen and I took 2nd place in the Backlashers of KC 2nd tournament stop. Friday’s practice, piggybacking off what I learned in the SBC tournament, had us following the migration of the bass back into creek arms and spawning pockets. On Friday, the bass literally would bite nearly anything we threw at them BUT a jerk bait. Saturday we ended up with just shy of 13lbs as we couldn’t find a kicker fish. Our best fish came on top water (original Heddon Zara Spook) and plastics. Sunday was post frontal conditions that really got squirrelly when the 40+ mph winds kicked into gear. We went nearly 3 hours Sunday morning without a keeper so we ventured further up the Kings River arm until we found some stained water. We quickly put a limit in the boat once I figured out that the fish now WANTED the jerk bait. Again, we just couldn’t get a kicker but we ended up getting 2nd place.

I have to say thanks to the companies that make this happen for me every time I’m on the water—Megabass of America, Daiwa Corporation - USA, St. Croix Rods, Fish Seaguar. Onto the next Backlashers tournament stop on May 13 at LaCygne!

A couple of good practice days and Dennis Mitchell and I were on them. We managed to put together a solid 15.66 lb limit today on Table Rock Lake in the SBC Buddy Bass Invitational Tournament. Our bag was anchored by Dennis’s 4.56lb largemouth that was good for 3rd place Big Bass. We ended up in 7th place overall out of a 68 boat field. 10th place to 1st place was separated by less than 3 lbs so it was tight at the top.

A full fishing report to follow! I will say that I have to thank all of the companies that keep me outfitted in the best gear on earth to chase these green monsters all over the Midwest!

Backlashers of KC Tour 2023 began yesterday on Bone Creek! It was a tough day for Justin Allen and I. We tried to pattern the fish based on last week but it didn’t pan out. We managed only one keeper each which did not get us anywhere near the check line. I caught min late morning with my St. Croix Rods LegendXtreme 6’8” MXF paired with a Daiwa Corporation - USA Tatula 6.3/1 reel spooled with 10lb Seaguar(シーガー) InvisX 100% fluorocarbon line. I had a Megabass - メガバス Vision 110 tied on this week and the color was MG Sexy Stream. I have the next couple of weeks off (to get all the yard work done) then it is back-to-back events at Table Rock starting with the SBC Invitational on the 22nd and Backlashers Tour stop #2 on the 29th and 30th. !!

We are off and fishing in 2023! Big bass on an otherwise tough day for Justin Allen and I. She went 4.7lbs and I caught her off a main lake point late morning with my St. Croix Rods LegendXtreme 6’8” MXF paired with a Daiwa Corporation - USA Tatula 6.3/1 reel spooled with 10lb Seaguar(シーガー) InvisX 100% fluorocarbon line and the lure was a Luck "E" Strike Rick Clunn STX jerkbait and the color was Emerald Shad. Next week, same lake different tour! !!

After 2 quick bites out of the gate this morning, the River had us stymied until early afternoon. We got on a pattern that put us in position to win but we ran out of time. We brought 4 to the scales that went 12 lbs even. We needed that 5th fish to push us past the winners who had 14.24. A respectable showing on a generally tough day at LOZ.

07/11/2022

Justin Allen and I managed a 3rd place finish on Wilson Lake, Kansas this past weekend fishing the Backlashers of KC 6th tournament and tour stop. We brought over 25 pounds to the scales over 2 days but that was not enough to get us as far as we wanted! Lower water levels and changing winds changed our bite just enough that we did not land the kicker we needed on Sunday to get the W. It was a great tournament on what is an amazing fishery.
