This week’s is Talk Talk - Laughing Stock. Released in 1991, Laughing Stock is Talk Talk’s follow up to their 1988 release Spirit of Eden. Eden was a departure from their early 80s output which tended towards a New Romantic pop style. With Eden, Talk Talk explored a more minimalist sound and helped pioneer the modern post-rock sound.

Laughing Stock delves even deeper into this sound with sparse arrangements, incorporating both classical and jazz elements. Laughing Stock often draws comparisons to Miles Davis’s In a Silent Way in its sound and atmosphere. This would be the final Talk Talk studio album with Mark Hollis releasing his self titled and only solo studio album in 1998 (which is also essential listening). Laughing Stock is one of my favorite records to listen to either very early in the morning or late in the evening. Available in the shop now.
