πŸ₯³ From the tallest elk to the tiniest salamanders, everyone in the national park is celebrating 92 years of the Great Smoky Mountains! πŸŽ‰πŸŽŠ

On June 15, 1934, the national park was officially established by Congress, setting aside these mountains, valleys, and everything in them "for the permanent enjoyment of the people."

Over the past 92 years, the Smokies have grown to become the most-visited national park in the United States, a place where visitors from all over the world can come to share in the Smokies' history, marvel at the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, and wonder at the incredible biodiversity.

Help us celebrate by sharing your favorite thing to do in the Great Smoky Mountains!

She has fifty teeth, venom immunity, and the lowest body temperature of any mammal her size. Most people see her crossing the yard at midnight and assume the worst.

🌿 The opossum doesn't dig up gardens. She doesn't chew wiring. She doesn't start territory fights with the pets. She eats the slugs, the beetles, the grubs, and the fallen fruit β€” then disappears into the brush pile before sunrise.

She's the only marsupial in North America. Opposable thumbs on her hind feet. A prehensile tail that grips branches. And a body temperature so low that most viruses can't replicate in her system.

A brush pile in a quiet corner. That's the entire ask 🐾

Remember our local Fallen πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Memorial Day is a time to remember every American service member who gave their life in defense of our countryβ€”from distant battlefields of the past to the conflicts of our own time.

Today, Gatlinburg Roots pauses to remember eleven Sevier County men who left these mountains for Vietnam and never returned home.

Their names are part of a larger legacy of sacrifice carried by local families through every generation of military service, from World War I and World War II to Korea, Vietnam, the Middle East, and beyond.

May these names continue to be remembered:

Carroll David Abbott

Dannie Arthur Carr

Randy Ralph Cogdill

Hobart Earl Covington

Gary Reagan Fox

Harry Gaines Hodges

Alton Lee Hornbuckle

Estel Huskey

Eddie Manis

Jerry McCarter

Michael Clarence Vickery

Their stories ended far from home.

Their names remain here.

Follow the Legacy β€” Gatlinburg Roots is an ongoing heritage project sharing rare images, forgotten family stories, and voices from the mountains, preserving Gatlinburg history and the everyday life and memory of earlier generations. Keep on Rootin'. To contribute rare photos or family stories to this project, send a message to the page.

Congratulations to the Joseph Stack Family for being recognized for their outstanding dream and hard work through the years, a wonderful family to call friends!

We are proud to announce that Joseph and Elizabeth Stacks have been selected as the 2026 Columbia County Farm Bureau Farm Family of the Year. The Stacks Family operates Stacks Family Farms in Taylor, where they run a diverse and growing operation that includes a cow calf herd, sheep program, and hay production.

Their livestock program is built on quality and intentional management. The family markets calves and breeding stock through a combination of private treaty sales and local livestock auctions, and they raise 50–80 lambs annually for seed stock, show projects, and farm to table sales. They also maintain honeybee hives for pollination and small batch honey production, and they utilize dairy goats and nurse cows to efficiently raise orphan lambs and calves.

Agriculture is a family effort for the Stacks. Their children, Julieann and Holland, are involved in FFA, 4 H, showing livestock, and agricultural leadership. Julieann recently served as the 2025–2026 Arkansas FFA State President, and Holland is the current Taylor FFA Chapter President. Both have earned numerous agricultural honors and each continues to build impressive Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs. Beyond FFA, they are active in their church, community leadership programs, and junior livestock associations.

The Stacks family began their farming journey in 2018 with a desire to raise their children around livestock and agricultural values. What started with 24 acres and a small group of sheep has grown into a multifaceted, well managed operation built on hard work, innovation, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Please join us in congratulating the Stacks family on this well-deserved honor.

Look up to the sky! Two Full Moons this May!

May's full MOONS are coming up! Yes, you read that right. . . plural! There will be two full Moons in May 2026! πŸŒ•οΈπŸŒ•οΈ

The first full Moon is on Friday, May 1, aptly named the full Flower Moon appearing big and bright on May Day!

The second full Moon will occur on Sunday, May 31, which will be May's full Blue Moon. Ever heard the expression, "once in a blue moon"? Well, this is where it comes from! The second full Moon in any month is always called a Blue Moon, and it only happens every so often πŸŒ•οΈ

Cloud cover may block your view but if able enjoy a full moon of Spring tonight!

Don’t miss tonight’s Full Pink Moon πŸŒ•πŸ’—

It reaches peak illumination at 10:12 PM EDT, and it should be a beautiful night to look up. Despite the name, the moon usually won’t actually appear bright pink β€” the name comes from the early spring wildflowers that bloom this time of year.

Are you planning to watch it tonight?
