Walking onions are perrenial whereas most onions are biennial. They swell to the size of a shallot and produce a topset of bulbils atop the flower stalk. When the flower stalk dries, it falls to the ground leaving the topset in contact with the ground. Over time the topset will sprout roots and pin to the ground creating a walking effect. In turn the original bulb resprouts truly perrenial in nature.

The entire plant is edible accept the flower stalk. Enjoy green onions, use the bulb as any onion and wr find using the larger bulbils like pearl onions in canning recipes.

They are listed as hardy in zones 3-10.

Bulbils available to start your Egyptian Walking onion patch today.

It's all in the soil!

We have been growing with wood chip covering for over 10 years here in East Tennesse where orange clay is the dominant soil type. The layered organic matter breaks down and creates wonderful compost which not only builds up above the clay but also percolates down into the clay over time.

Jerusalem Artichokes aka Sunchokes (Helianthus tuberosus) are in the sunflower family and provide an edible tuber. They are rather aggressive and can provide...
