“Rosh” means head or beginning.
“Hashanah” means the year.
So, it literally means “Head of the Year”, not just “New Year.” In Jewish thought, this emphasizes that it’s the start of a spiritual cycle, not just a date on a calendar. It’s the “head” because what happens at the beginning affects the whole year—reflecting on your actions, seeking forgiveness, and setting intentions for improvement.
Unlike secular New Year celebrations that focus on parties and resolutions, Rosh Hashanah is about accountability, reflection, and renewal—kind of like hitting the reset button on your soul!
