One of my favorite Polish breakfasts — simple, traditional, and SO good. 🇵🇱❤️
Fresh Polish bread topped with twaróg półtłusty, a traditional Polish farmer’s cheese, and black currant jam (dżem z czarnej porzeczki). Add a cup of coffee in Polish pottery, and I really don’t need anything more. ☕️💙
Twaróg is one of those foods that is hard to explain until you’ve tasted the real thing in Poland. It’s a fresh white curd cheese — firmer and more crumbly than cottage cheese — and it has been an everyday part of Polish cooking for generations. We eat it savory with chives, radishes or sour cream, but also sweet with honey, sugar, fruit preserves or jam. It’s also the cheese behind so many Polish favorites, including pierogi, naleśniki and traditional Polish cheesecake. (Culture.pl)
And bread has an especially long history in Poland. References to Polish bread go back to the 13th century, and rye became one of the most important grains used for traditional bread baking. Bread also became a symbol of hospitality and prosperity in Polish culture. (Gov.pl)
For me, the best combination is exactly what you see here: a slice of Polish bread, a generous layer of twaróg, and tart black currant jam on top. The slightly sour cheese with the sweet-and-tart currants is just perfect.
Nothing fancy. Just a very Polish breakfast that tastes like home. 🇵🇱❤️
And of course, breakfast tastes even better served on Polish pottery. 💙
