Do you recognize these leaves? 🌿 They belong to an extremely versatile plant with almost all parts of it being edible. Did you guess it? It’s Moringa!

You heard that right, almost all parts of this plant are edible! It’s also packed vital nutrients like calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamins A,C, and E!

Here are 4 of the many different ways you can use Moringa:

1. Add fresh, tender leaves into a salad or soups as a spinach replacement.🥗

2. Dried leaves can be used whole or crushed into a powder and added to smoothies or teas. ☕️

3. Use young, tender seed pods, often called “drumsticks”, in soups and stews.🍲

4. Roast mature seeds in the oven for a crunchy, nutty snack. 🌱

They’re in stock now so get them while supplies last!

I had a whole newsletter written for today and then realized that I’d completely forgotten that this Sunday is Father’s Day! So after a few attempts to rewrite my newsletter, I decided you’ll have to read about how I became a “Florida Man” later. And as luck would have it, just as I was puzzling over what to write, my dad sent me this picture, with the caption “The ‘almost dead’ honeysuckle has a friend!”

Obviously, this needs some explanation. Some months back my dad came out to the Nursery to get a few things for his garden, and one of the items on his list was a Coral Honeysuckle. If you’ve ever planted this vine, you know that it is hardy (it’s a Florida native), it’s low maintenance, it’s beautiful, and it attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. Win-win-win-win. Because of that, it’s pretty popular and so we can’t always keep it in stock. And that was the case on this day. We were out. But then I remembered seeing one bedraggled pot of it somewhere. I just couldn’t remember where it was. So I did a little dash around the Nursery to spots where we try to hide plants that are past their prime.

When I did find it, it was in worse shape than I’d thought. It seemed like maybe it had two or three plants in the pot, but only one was showing signs of life...

You’ve probably heard our watering lecture for new plants a million times:

Water everyday for the first month, every other day for the second month, and twice weekly for the third month. Always in the morning.

But let’s break it down:

🌱Consistency – The consistency of the watering schedule is key. Plants need regular water.

🌅Morning – Always water in the morning so the plants can properly take up water.

📏Deep – Deep waterings ensure that plenty of water gets through the entire root system and encourages growth downward.

💧Hose – Hand-watering with a hose is best for new plants to deliver the deep watering they need to become well established.

And there you have it. To be a watering pro with thriving plants, you need to water consistently, in the morning, deeply with your garden hose. One more time: consistent, morning, deep, hose. Follow this and all of your plants are going to thrive like they never have before!

P.S. Even though it’s rainy season here in Florida, it doesn’t rain everyday, but it is hot everyday. So if you’re establishing new plants, you might have to water even on days that it’s rained or is going to rain. If we only get a light afternoon drizzle, that’s probably not enough for that month old 25 gallon Magnolia tree. If you received over an inch of rain, you can skip watering for that day only.

We want you to succeed in your garden, so let us know what questions you have about watering! ☺️

You would think that after staying at a lovely 3-story VRBO on a lake in Tennessee that I’d come back talking about the views, jumping from a fifteen-foot dock into the water, kayaking through the finger lakes, singing karaoke, and just generally enjoying time with friends. We recently stayed at this awesome place on Lake Norris, and it was so much fun. In fact, it was kind of wild. Kim and I coordinated almost 30 people from 11 families staying together for a few days. That level of logistics and organization is not for the faint of heart but still not what we all remember from this trip. It was for Scholastic Rowing Association’s National Championships, which our daughter Abby got to compete in. Again, you’d think that would be what my story was about or what we’d remember.

What truly wasn’t for the faint of heart was the driveway that led into this amazing house. Every driver in our group will remember it for a long time. We had families arriving at various times, some in the middle of the night, and as a precaution I sent them pictures, texts, various messages, warning of how steep this driveway was. I even met most of them at the top of it, just to make sure they didn’t drive down and get stuck...

There is a trail of unfinished projects behind me at home and at work that would circle the Nursery twice. A half-built table, plans scribbled on fragments of cardboard boxes, garden beds started with absolute confidence and abandoned somewhere between “visionary” and “What was I thinking?” For years I just thought that was part of my personality. Ambitious. Distracted. Constantly chasing the next exciting thing before the current thing had a chance to settle into place. Seemed normal to me. Honestly, I’m not sure what it would feel like to fully finish a project and just enjoy it without constantly pivoting to the next thing.

A second problem is that I don’t dream small. When we created raised beds at home, I could have done neat rectangles in straight lines. Instead, I envisioned a giant mandala some thirty feet across that had to span a change in elevation of about 4 feet. Full confession: two years later it isn’t 100% completed. I don’t dream small. I never have. Sometimes that creates magic. Sometimes it creates a pile of lumber and unfinished plans sitting in the Florida sun.

And somehow, right in the middle of all that chaos, The Flower Patch happened.…
