The problem isn’t a lack of lines on the map. It’s that too many of those lines are drawn where few people feel safe using them.

Some more basic changes to be considered bike-friendly:
1. People don’t fear riding a bike.
2. People don’t ride bikes on sidewalks (usually done because of reason 1)
3. Cyclists will not be expected to ride in fake-bike-lanes, like door zones.
4. It should be easier to bike than using a car (including easy and secure bike parking)

Sebastopol has a ways to go!

What does it actually take to make a city bicycle-friendly?

It’s more than just dedicating a few lanes to cyclists. We found that the top bicycle-friendly cities stood out in their:

✔️Safe and connected infrastructure through high-quality bicycle infrastructure and parking areas as well as traffic calming and safety practices

✔️High usage and reach through a high bicycle modal share and gender equity as well as a high concentration of bicycle share systems and cargo bikes

✔️Advanced cycling policies and continued political support through considered urban planning and promoting a positive image of the bicycle

If you want to dive deeper into why these three pillars matter when it comes to creating a bicycle-friendly city, we’re bringing our Master Class online this April. We’ve condensed a decade of bicycle urbanism expertise and our Index into three live, 2-hour sessions designed to help you apply these global best practices and tools to your own city.

Full rate 600€ incl. VAT.

The curbs these cyclists are leaning on are excellent examples of bike-friendly-design.

Eight cyclists occupy approximately the same road space as one car.

In London, around 60% of car trips are made by a single occupant. This means that a large proportion of urban road capacity is consumed by vehicles moving one person at a time.
Congestion is not a consequence of cycle lanes. It is the spatial inefficiency of private cars.
When cities allocate space to cycling, they are not reducing capacity — they are increasing it. Bicycles move more people per square metre, reduce emissions, improve public health, and require far less infrastructure investment.

The question is not whether we can afford cycle lanes.
The question is whether we can afford to dedicate most of our urban space to the least space-efficient mode of transport.
