We here at Oblivion Books have been designing and publishing an ongoing series of large-scale posters entitled “The Saints of Oblivion.” This series celebrates historical figures who lived unique and transformative counter-lives; folks who proposed and embodied strategies to enchant, enhance, resist, and to achieve escape velocity from the insufferable banalities of everyday life.

We are pleased to announce our latest publication in the series:
The “Ghost Dance into Another World” broadside is a large format double-sided poster, measuring 19" x 28.5" and printed on high quality durable paper. The textual content features an examination of the sublime and elevated practice of the Native American "Ghost Dance." The Ghost Dance was first received in a visionary state by Wovoka, a Paiute shaman, in Nevada in 1889. The Dance is a reverential Native ceremony in which the tribal participants circle-dance themselves into transportive states and received directive messages from the ‘Ghostly’ spirit world beyond. Historically set against the stark material and psychic conditions of Native life – depravation and dislocation to the reservations, the winnowing of tribal tradition, harassment and violence from the U.S. authorities, and the relentless pressure to convert to Christianity – this new vision promised peaceful coexistence with the white colonial power and at the same time promoted tribal unity, renewal, and hope. Wovoka was heralded as a “messiah” and the empowering Ghost Dance prophecy and practice bloomed across the American plains. The Ghost Dance was (and continues to be) an exuberant unifying community practice.

The poster was designed by Michael Douglas and Edward Guerriero under the direction of Asher Dinn and Eddie Lee Sausage for Oblivion Books.

Proceeds from the sale of the Ghost Dance poster will go to benefit Native Americans under direct advisory.

Inner Plains
The first full-length sound collaboration between an{EEL} and Eddie Lee Sausage, released by Steve Davis and Love Earth Music in March 2024.

Eddie Lee Sausage:
I first met Neal D Retke [an{EEL}] at dreamtime village in rural Wisconsin thirty years ago. We were assembled to investigate life applications of the great tome “A Thousand Plateaus” by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. It was the beginning of our exploration together. We crossed paths again elsewhere in the Midwest, later in the Northwest, and more recently in the digital realm. Interacting with an{EEL} in any landscape is always a joy. A remarkably thoughtful, responsive, playful, impossibly prolific, seasoned explorer of free artistic expression. Now deep within our own creative grooves, it turns out that we had arrived at a similar destination in terms of ‘musical’ expression – some sort of outsider electro-acoustic improv-generated sonic collage.

an{EEL} invited me to ‘send some sounds’ for a possible collaboration. While pondering this prospect on an afternoon drive, I suddenly spotted a pile of cellos on the side of the road. I pulled over (of course) and procured a weathered cello from a yard sale. When I arrived home, the first thing I played on the cello in one single improvisational flow opened the recording process of “Inner Plains.” With the sun pouring into the room I moved from one instrument to the next – mbira, autoharp, piano, electric bass (treated with springs, screws, and metal bits), air organ, shruti box, melodica, and a toy megaphone. Within 3 hours I had recorded seven sound foundations for an{EEL} to add to, compose from, arrange, and (hopefully) derange. A week later his clever, delightful, surprising contributions, productions, and dis-assemblies arrived. We handed it off to ElZombie Espacial for expert mastering.
For the cover art it seemed obvious to turn to another master of chance operations, Craig S Wilson. Craig had also attended the “Thousand Plateaus” playshop where I met an{EEL} 30 years ago. Legendary noise champion, sound collagist himself, infamous “Bananafish” publisher, and my favorite living writer Seymour Glass rendered the liner notes.

Welcome to the “Inner Plains.” Travel with us, have a listen.

Oblivion Books presents “The Freedom to Wander” by Isabelle Eberhardt in a double-sided broadside poster. Isabelle Eberhardt was an adventurer, gender outlaw, determined journalist, spirited anti-authoritarian, Sufi dervish, probable spy, and a rhapsodic lover of desert geography. Eberhardt detested the civilization of her European birth and fled to the spacious landscape of Islamic North Africa. In this inspirational essay Isabelle Eberhardt presents her worldview on the contours of personal liberation, the rejection of complacency, willful vagrancy, and the elemental desire to explore external and internal geographies.

"The Freedom to Wander" is offset printed on both sides in a sizeable format (19″x 28.5″). It features Eberhardt's entire essay illustrated by images that symbolize her core beliefs. The rear panel features quotes from her journals regarding the phenomena that composed her very life - chance, surrender, and the lure of the nomadic terrain.

This collaboration between Michael Douglas and Eddie Lee Sausage was generated for Oblivion Books to celebrate the exemplary legacy and singular manner in which Eberhardt practiced her life as a true saint of Oblivion. Limited to 100 copies.
