We’ve made it to Monday, so we’re coming atcha without another common misconception: Succulents do not equal beginner plants!
🌵
Succulents are drought tolerant plants which means they hold moisture in their fleshly leaves which allow them to go long periods of time without needing to be watered.
🌵
However “drought tolerant” and “thrives on neglect” are not synonymous. Frankly, no plant “thrives on neglect.” Succulents, just like other common houseplants have very unique requirements…anyone tried to grow a string of pearls? Yeah…I’ve killed about 4.
🌵
Many succulents require very specific light requirements and well draining soil to avoid root rot (which is the most common method of distraction for new plant parents).
🌵
If you are a beginner and you want to add a few succulents to your collection, start with a Jade plant or any plant in the crassula family. These plants need bright indirect light, but will also do well in direct sun, they are hearty plants that need infrequent watering, but will survive if you do tend to be an overwaterer.
🌵
If you want something more exotic, try a small cactus or a zebra plant (commonly named a hawthoria).
🌵
Make sure that you purchase cactus and succulent soil to ensure proper drainage and terra-cotta pots are the best for succulents to allow for maximum airflow.
🌵
DO NOT BUY A “MOON CACTUS” you know those cute ones at home depot with the little red, orange, or yellow tops. I know they’re adorable, but they are a guaranteed death sentance. They are actually two cacti graphed together (read, they cut the head off one cactus and stick it on top of another). These frankenbabies are cute, but as the cactus grows they will naturally separate from each other causing both parts of the plant to die.
🌵
So, what are some of your favorite beginners succulents?
