This viola d'amore came to my shop for restoration a while ago. Having just come into possession of it himself the owner had no information on it. After removing the top I saw the inscription on the inside upper bout (see photo). Assuming that the last name having been worn away the inscription would read "Oreste Cesare Candi". As far as I know the Candi brothers never worked in Brussels. Any ideas? Could it be an early collaboration when they worked at the Barberis brothers factory?

A few years ago I had the good fortune to be able to study a renaissance bass viol by Ventura Linarol from 1582 in the collection of the National Music Museum. Now, my copy of that instrument is ready for sale!

This is a photo of my great uncle Thomas Smith in front of his cabinet making shop in 1935. I have a few of his tools in my shop that I use frequently. They are much beloved.
