Our creative director is leading a Natural Dye Retreat to Southern Italy this October 9-18th.

Join Cara at for an immersive and restorative retreat working with the sacred plants of the Mediterranean.

We will explore creating color from plants grown right on the monastery’s grounds. We will have day trips to neighboring towns, mornings for the sea, chances for cooking classes and more.

This trip is for all those looking to learn about natural dyes while deepening their connection to the land, and enjoying time for rest. We will explore our connections from hand to heart to land.

The tour has a few spots available.

If interested, the link to sign up is in Cara’s bio or email her at [email protected] to learn more.

See you in Italy.

Mordant Monday coming at you on a Tuesday ( Cara’s fault here apologies - humans run this account )!

How to make a great red with madder extract. This month we launched Creating Color with Kathy, a new free series via zoom and on our YouTube where Kathy does a deep dive into a natural dye. Madder felt wonderful for winter as it’s a root based color. In this Mordant Monday we address the growing demand for red wool 😉 and give you a tutorial to get this gorgeous hue.

We are so excited to announce a new workshop by ! The Eco-Printed Image
July 11, 2026
Live Online Workshop Via Zoom: 12pm PST / 3pm EST – This class will be recorded.

In this workshop we will discover how eco-printing can transcend into the fields of painting, drawing, and collage with the addition of two different methods: the single plane paper image, and the stencil mirror-printed image. We will begin by covering the basics of scouring and mordanting, how to press and store plant matter for projects, and how to make paper patterns for eco-printing. Then we will delve into the limitless world of pictorial based printing by learning how to create a design using appliqué for a paper pattern, and how to accurately lay pressed foliage and botanicals to achieve your desired results. This class will also cover additional information like steam times, how to scale projects up, and how to equip yourself with everything you need for pictorial printing.

Sydni developed what she calls The Eco-printed Image, a pictorial printing method that expands the field of eco-printing into drawing, painting, and collage. The process includes two approaches, the Stencil Mirror Printed Image and the Single Plane Paper Image, both centered on the idea that plant material can produce more than the standalone print of a leaf or flower.

After purchasing this workshop you will receive a link to download your zoom log in. This is for YOU only, please respect our instructors and their practice. This class will be recorded, so if you can’t make it live, no worries! We send the recording after and you will have access to watch for 6 months.

From Plant to Pigment: Cook the Book with Natalie Stopka June 25-28, 2026

In this four-day workshop, participants will follow along with Natalie to cook their way through her book From Plant to Pigment: How to make your own vibrant inks, pastels and paints, concocting a rainbow of lake pigments from a variety of extraction methods. We’ll also dip into indigo pigments, charcoal, ink, and pastel. Working through the recipes with Natalie’s guidance, we will reveal the operative chemistry of botanical pigments, come to grips with the question of lightfastness, and learn to control the value, saturation, translucency, and opacity of our colors.

This workshop is designed to provide a solid technical foundation, along with rich context for artistic inspiration and conceptual connectivity. Participants will leave with a travel case of 12 watercolors in brilliant hues, and the knowledge to continue expanding their palette with handmade botanical pigments. Don’t let From Plant to Pigment suffer the fate of so many art manuals and cookbooks: sitting on a shelf to gather dust, their contents unplumbed and lessons unlearned!

Inspired by the history and craft of color-making, From Plant to Pigment: How to make your own vibrant inks, pastels and paints is a recipe book for creating handmade, homegrown, and local pigments. Join author Natalie Stopka to learn the process of transmuting fragile botanical dyes into vibrant lake pigments and a take-home palette of watercolors.

Travel Information

Seattle in late June is glorious, with extra long days and sunshine. We will plan a charcoal making excursion to a nearby park or the beach along with cocktails and mocktails, so don’t miss out on one of our workshop highlights of the year!

This workshop date overlaps with the FIFA World Cup and if you are traveling from out of town, we recommend making travel arrangements early.

Mordant Monday: It's winter, and many of us have taken up knitting and crocheting during the cooler weather. While I'm thinking about knitting, my mind wanders to mordanting (of course), and some of the questions we’ve received from curious dyers.

This Mordant Monday, I thought I'd start with some common questions when mordanting changes the hand feel and quality of wool fibers.

The natural dye process uses a lot of heat, and a fair amount of handling: stirring, squeezing, rinsing. It’s easy for wool to react to all of this and become rougher feeling, even felted! Check out this week’s Mordant Monday to avoid the pitfalls and some easy solutions for wool fibers.
