New Nonfiction this week:
Murderland - “I’m in awe of Murderland. Caroline Fraser writes with full confidence in her research and with full conviction as she mines the Pacific Northwest for all the ways it let years of tragedy, pollution, and evil run wild in this landscape. She ends the book with the most powerful last page I’ve ever read. This is an extreme work of scholarship and passion.” - Torrin
The Book of Birds - A dazzling celebration of endangered birds.

"Long forgotten childhood memories gently surface in this disarmingly beautiful tale of Daphne, who is reacquainted with her beloved, but lost stepfather. Brimming with recollections, lost stories and the serendipity of rediscovery, Patchett’s writing shines in ways that make this story feel deeply personal!” - Wendee

It’s Hard to be an Animal - one of the great new books this week. “Truly funny! Quirky in the best way. This first novel by Robert Isaacs won me over from the beginning. What unfolded was a nearly genre-defying novel - part mystery, part magical realism, with a little romance and a lot of humor (at everyone’s expense). I totally LOVED this book!” - James

Yesterday SAL hosted Tommy Orange, author of bestsellers There, There and Wandering Stars.Tommy talked about growing up and living in Oakland, his Native American background, mixing with other cultures, hardships, family, and of course his two wonderful books.

Local author (Queen Anne!!!) Laurie Frankel stopped by our store to sign copies of her newly released book Enormous Wings. “… Frankel fans will recognize the overall sense of tenderness, respect, community, and strength that pervade the novel. I particularly loved how Pepper, Moth, and friends demonstrate healthy, heartwarming, mature love, both romantic and platonic. This book is somehow shocking, galvanizing, and comforting all at once. …” — Tegan
Thank you for stopping by Laurie. It’s always a pleasure to see you!

During the Spring Wine Walk, Nicholas O’Connell will be at our store to sign copies of and talk about his book Crush: My Year as an Apprentice Winemaker.

In Crush Nicholas O’Connell provides a behind-the-scenes look at the daily operations of some of the world’s most prestigious wineries on the West Coast. Wine is surrounded by a seemingly impenetrable cloud of descriptors—“wet dog,” “kumquats,” “cat pee”—and a fog of pretention. Crush pierces this fog with colorful, concrete storytelling, in-depth portraits of famous winemakers, and a lively, down-to-earth description of the process by which wine is made: not in the critic’s mind but in the winery and vineyard.

Lynn Cahoon honored us with a visit and signed copies of her new book Confessions of an Amateur Sleuth (A Bainbridge Island Mystery #2), in which Bainbridge Island bookseller, aspiring author, and amateur sleuth Meg (no relation to Bill) Gates investigates the murder of a crabby food critic. This is the second book in her delightful new PNW-set mystery series.
